Weaning and nappies

6mo DD is on a mission to destroy me (and the washing machine) with her constant constant pooing since weaning started. I'm trying to keep things simple with just one single vegetable or just baby porridge and even took a break for a few days to give things a chance to calm down but nothing is working.

I expected some changes to poo volume but she's having 6-7 explosive nappies day and night (hence all the clothes washing). She seems well in herself and doesn't have a temperature so I'm not overly worried - just a bit baffled by all the poo.

Please someone tell me this shit storm phase will pass and is totally normal. How many dirty nappies are normal at this stage?? We've been at this weaning business now for about 3 weeks and has been ebf til now.

I'm not saying it isn't normal but my dd didn't react that way when she started weaning. Though she took a long time to really start eating and was only having very, very small quantities of food. I do wonder if your dd could have an allergy to something though as it sounds like quite an extreme reaction. Are you mixing her porridge with water or cows or breast milk? My dd does get a similar reaction with cow's milk which she starting having aged one.

My dc had less poo's when we started weaning not more?! Is she eating large quantities? If large quantities of mushy stuff goes in then the same will come out the other end! Maybe try just finger food instead Of the mushy stuff? See if it makes a difference?

I too thought cows milk protein allergy?!
It can take a bit of time for their digestion to settle down as I understand it... Worth a non- urgent GP visit?
Veg is just fibre and water though... Is it worth trying protein / carbs?
(We are blw so it's different)

Seems extreme. DS is nearly 6 mo and we've been weaning the last 3 weeks. He loves everything and has eaten a lot of different foods and seems keen to eat a lot. Mixture of purees and fruit/ toast crust in the hand. He was ebf up to 3 weeks ago. I'm making up packet porridge with breast milk and adding to mashed potato etc. But he has had dairy in the form of natural yoghurt.
He's gone from one giant dirty nappy every 3-4 days, when ebf, to one smallish formed poop every day or every second day (sorry tmi perhaps?)

I thought the same with volume of food but she only has 5/6 baby spoon fulls once a day. Is this too much??

She's always been a very refluxy baby and I have considered the milk protein allergy in the past. The porridge is aptamil so is, I presume, cows milk powder mixed with boiled water. I'll maybe stop with the porridge and cut down on chocolate dairy myself and see if it helps.
villainous I'm jealous of your smallish formed poop (well, not yours obviously Grin)

If 5-6 spoons is too much, we're really overdoing things here! DS has days where he tries to get his face into the bowl. He probably has 20 spoonfuls in a day, though today he wasn't so keen.

It seems sensible to leave out the cows' milk for a bit.

DS had ferocious explody nappies at 4-5-6 weeks of age which was attributed to intestinal lactose overload and consequent fermentation due to my considerable oversupply. It settled down with the introduction of a schedule to calm the milky torrents. That's probably not relevant to your situation.

The only other bum-bursting episode with him was when I switched to xylitol sweetener in tea. It's well-known to have a laxative effect when consumed in excess. You wouldn't happen to have done that?

I have switched to sweetener but it's stevia and I don't think that has a laxative effect.

TBH it will probably do me some good to adjust my very heavy dairy based diet!

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Mine did the same. I end up speaking to the doc as she was pooping 9-10 times a day (explosions!) and we ended up taking a stool sample in. It turned out that she had a 'water-born parasite' in her gut. Th doc said there was no treatment just had to wait it out, it could be months until it left her system!

She's now pooping probably 1-3 times a day now so it's a little better but still frustrating!

My DS is pooing about the same although it is thicker and more 'adult like'. We get some dark green poo and wormy ones depending on what he's eaten!

Explosive poos that frequent sounds like a possible intolerance to me

I take it back! DS has done 3 poos today although they have been solid and not explosive. He is starting to eat more too.
