6 month old, just started introducing solids (literally first couple of days ), really robust little boy, showing g signs of readiness for ages etc, can hold things and put into mouth no bother - so i thought i would try fi ger food of slightly cooked carot (having tried and liked baby rice) - he held it but nearly choked himself he shoved it so far in - and then gummed a huge bit off and nearly choked. I nearly sh*t myself! How can you start off with finger foods safely? Or should i just stick to lumpy purees for a while?

I was the same at the start but I worked out that choking and gagging/coughing are very different. Choking is when food is stuck, but gagging is normal to start with. Baby is learning what they can handle, it is shit scary when it first happens but it's normal. I found lumpy purees worse because you spoon them in and baby can't judge the lumps until they swallow.

It is, definitely. DS is 8 months now and a little food monster. He'll eat curries, stirfry, casserole, scrambled egg on toast. He seems to prefer big chunks so he can hold them but still be able to bite/chew/gum bits off to eat.
