Bread/cheese for 7 month old

Which type of bread or bread products are best to give a baby when weaning? We normally eat wholemeal as a family but I read not to give wholemeal products. We sometimes also eat sourdough and I wonder if this would be suitable. I am conscious of needing to avoid too much salt.

Also which cheeses are best in terms of being low in salt?

Thanks

I'm sure wholemeal and sourdough are fine. I think they'd need to eat huge ampunts of bread to get a salt overdose but may be I'm wrong ...
You can give whatever cheeses you feel like I think, but maybe avoid mouldy ones and unpasteurised for the listeriosis risk? Also some cheese (pecorino? parmesan? Stuff like Port Salut?) is really salty so perhaps best avoided.

If I remember correctly about one slice of bread contains a baby's daily salt intake.

They only eat a tiny bit at that age though, even if you give them a whole slice to play with.

I've been advised no more than 2 slices of bread a day due to salt

I'm using emmental for my 10mo as it has 0.5g/100g of salt, vs 1.8g/100g in cheddar. If anyone find any real cheese with lower salt content, I'd love to know.

We gave DS wholemeal, which I didn't know you weren't supposed to (harder to digest apparently), I made my own (bread maker) and not add salt (I had to put salt in my sandwiches though!), but he'd have the odd slice of hovis. Cheese I'd give him a mini-baby-bel - it's probably quite salty - but easy to portion-control.

The HV said on dietary recommendations that you need to average it out, so if some days he had more than the recommended 1g of salt, no problem, just don't give him cheese the next day...

Thanks all. That's useful to know about averaging out.

It's true that babies shouldn't have too much wholemeal food as it's so filling that it can mean they don't consume enough calories. But I really wouldn't worry about giving a bit of wholemeal bread if that's what the rest of the family have. Just avoid giving wholemeal everything so use white pasta and rice and don't give loads of bread.

I think a typical loaf of bread contains 0.3-0.5g of salt per slice, from memory. But definitely worth checking the label as it can vary a lot.
