Weaning

6 month old disinterested & vomiting

I hope you can help. My DD is 6 months old and I have been weaning for 1 week. She has shown no interest in food and has closed her mouth to all that I have offered so far (baby rice, sweet potato, puréed pear, pitta stick, cucumber stick, toast, Hipp banana /yoghurt/ baby rice).

I was advised to make the consistency thinner to encourage her to taste things (puréed sweet potato with breast milk, 4+ plus Hipp jar, baby rice). I have put a tiny amount on the front of her tongue and she has gagged and been sick (contents of her stomach) 5 days in a row. Today I put a little on my finger and rubbed it on her lips. She was sick in her cot when she woke from a nap 2 hours later.

The health visitor advised to continue but everything suggests she's not ready. She's my second child and entirely breast fed.

Thank you for reading!

I haven't got any experience but I agree with you and would leave it a while. At this stage you don't need weaning to fill them up, so it's fine to leave it a while Smile

I wouldn't continue with it at all. It doesn't look to me she's ready.

My two wasn't interested until 27-28 weeks, ie a bit over 6mo. Neither will take a spoon and will only feed herself. I'm so lucky my HV suggested BLW to me for DD1. I just kept offering something Inwas eating and one day she just picked it up and put it to her mouth. You can try it this way with simple food like toast, sandwich, potatoes, veg etc. It really takes the stress out for me.

I mean I never tried putting the food in their mouths. Neither would open their mouths voluntarily. One day they just fed themselves

I agree it doesn't sound as if she is hungry yet so leave it a bit and try again. When she reaches the stage where milk no longer fills her up she will be much keener to try.

BTW I'd suggest the first few meals should only be milk with a tiny amount of baby rice in so it is still very liquid. Build it up very gradually over a couple of weeks. When she is happy to take sloppy consistency baby rice then you can start to add other things.

Agree you can also try her with finger foods to chew and suck on.

Sounds like her tongue thrust reflex is still there so she's not ready.

I agree, it doesn't sound like she's ready. Maybe do what a pp said and just offer some of whatever you're eating at mealtimes. She might just want to play with it for a few weeks but that's perfectly okay (if not a little messy!). She'll start eating when she's ready.
