Jars in baby food

Had to start early weaning on advise from consultant and pead due to numerous reasons. Baby is 5 and a half months been on soilds for 3 weeks and going really well. I tried making my own foods for her but she didn't like them except the fruits. So I have been making my own fruit puréed and then using jars of other things. Are they really that bad? I just thought it was saving a lot of money and time compared to making my own.As dd wasn't eating them. Also how much of a jar should she have if there is 125g in them

They're not awful, but they're not fresh and they tend to have a very consistent texture and taste, so you can run the risk of developing an unadventurous palate.

Could you make up some savoury purees of your own and freeze it in ice cube trays or similar? Then you can just defrost the small amount you need and there won't be any wastage.

I have tried making my own she eats any of the fruit ones but no veg or others but if I give her the equivalent of what I made from a jar she will eat it. She's been having porridge or baby rice with. Stewed fruit in the morning then sometimes a little something midday not always, then it's the evening where I struggle as she hates anything I make so I resort to jars

Have you tried just simple foods mashed?

Scrambled egg - can make sloppy if needed on spoon or thick and they use fingers

Avocado - mash and spoon, or slice and let them use hands

Banana - mashed or sliced

Salmon - flaked and spooned, or let them use hand

Etc.

At this age mine weren't keen on loads of things mixed up.

She has eczema and had a milk allergy so no adventurous foods yet until she has allergy testing mid summer so been doing fruits and veg son chicken etc... She's a little young for finger foods or lumps will be another few weeks for those. We are waiting to see a dietician. I can't help but think it's the sugar in the jar food she likes and when I make them I don't add anything. Would it be wrong to add anything?

My 2 (and every other child in Switzerland and Germany) were weaned exclusively on baby jars. The food is mostly organic and of really high quality. If I had another child not happening I would do the same again.
Dcs are 8 and 11 now and have no food issues.

Try putting some stewed apple in with the veg purees, maybe, if apple is a taste she already likes? Then you can change the ratio over time.

I don't think many people are allergic to an avocado.. It's just a veg

Look at the ingredients of the jars. I think virtually all of the 'savoury' jars have a high proportion of fruit/juice - that's why the kids like them!

So your shepherds pie isn't nearly as sweet as the jar one and she rejects it. Try mixing apple/peach/pear with your dinners. If she goes for it you can then slowly decrease the fruit to get her onto the savoury flavours :)

Thanks everyone, fruit in dinners sounds selfish Shock

At some point you're going to move away from jars to normal family food. I tend to think the sooner the better so they get used to it. It isn't the end of the world at this age if she isn't particularly interested in it at the moment. If you keep offering it then she will get used to the taste. Making a sweeter savoury puree might be a way to start, either by adding apple or using sweeter veg like butternut squash, sweet potato, carrot, parsnip etc.
