Milk before or after food?

DD is EBF and about to start solids at 6 months.

Everyone seems to differ on whether to do a milk feed, then wait and give solids or whether to feed solids, then put her to the breast.

What did you do and why?
If it helps, she isn't the fastest weight gainer out there (though HV not worried) ... she tracks just under 9th percentile.

I did about an hour after a feed which worked well for us. That way they're not starving hungry but also not completely full and disinterested in food.

Same - milk about an hour before solids. As Culture says, that way they're not starving at meals and getting upset because they just want milk when they reach that point. And it ensured he continued to have plenty of milk. The hour gap meant he wasn't too stuffed.

Are you doing puree or BLW? I did BLW with DD1 and am doing it for DD2. With this approach you aim to all eat at the same time. So if baby isn't alseep while you are eating, give food. BF is totally independent to solids and still on demand. Once they eat a substantial amount it will all click into place with 3 meals, 2 milk feeds (mid morning and mid afternoon) etc.

With purees I have heard all sorts. Like an hour after milk, in between two breasts etc. I have two spoon refusers but have tried purees with both. Never had any success offering spoon at any time though.

And DD2 tracks between the lowest and the second lowest line. I think that's under 2nd centile isn't it?

Turns out she likes the idea of eating when it's there! Though I'm not doing strict blw ... I might roughly coincide her meals with mine. Easy enough as though not doing proper blw I'm mashing veg/fruit that we eat.

I'm quite relieved because she ate a load of apple today then still hungered for her milk as usual. Looks like she's happy for both! Smile

Two yes I think so. Mine is the next one up ... I need to remember it's growth rate not size that matters! Grin

Btw if you are worried about weight. Don't start with fruit unless that's what you prefer. I went for all the high calorie food. Like carbs and proteins. The only calorie rich fruit/veg is banana and avocado. The others are more 'diet'.

As an example DD2 gets toasts and omelette. And chicken. You can try porridge and I have seen AK do puree chicken too.

I think you can do either but we found if we offered after, DS wasnt really interested in his milk. However, if we offered before he would drink a full 6oz and then have food.

WRT high fat and protein- ds's first proper food was roti dipped in passanda sauce Blush. It was my birthday and we were at an indian buffet. It was a whole three days early but he was grabbing at it so we just let him have a bitBlush-he didn't actually eat a lot though!
I used to leave around an hour after milk before trying solids. We didn't do BLW, but purees, finger foods and mashed up stuff. DS was never that interested in the purees so stopped bothering and just mushed food up for him. He didn't drop a milk feed until between 8and 9 months though- which felt late compared to some of my friends. Very enthusiastic eater once he got going!
