How much vomiting normal in BLW?

Dd is 6 months and we started weaning at 22 weeks on the advice of the specialist as she had severe reflux with projectile vomiting approx 60 times per day. She took to home made veggie purées straight away, and her reflux was cured from day 1. Now we've started to introduce finger foods, which she seems to love shoving in her mouth, but she gags spectacularly and vomits up entire feeds as a result. Should I just give smooth food for now and hold off on the blw approach for a bit longer? I feel like it would be truly following the BL approach but I'm not sure if this is just a stage you have to go through with BLW?

Sorry to be nit picking but you aren't doing BLW. You are just doing traditional weaning, which actually has finger foods. You can look at books like annabel karmels. I think finger foods are usually from 7mo.

Have a look at introducing lumps and finger food at her website
www.annabelkarmel.com/food-parenting/weaning

BLW actually is totally self feeding by the baby. If you give purée the baby has to put the spoon in her own mouth.

Thanks Two, sorry, should have clarified that we had to start with purees due to the reflux, but I'd like to move to BLW now dd is 6 months, hence giving her a bit of whatever I'm having to have as finger foods. I suppose what I'm asking is whether moving to BLW just isn't going to work for dd?

I see what you mean now. Since she has already started purées and used to it, it probably make more sense to follow more AK style weaning? Is seem to remember reading on Rapley book that the baby who started on purees would learn to swallow the foods like it's liquid. That might be why your little one is vomiting everything up?

FWIW I don't have reflux babies so I don't know what's normal for them. My two are both spoon refuses and they gag on the food but never vomit. And not even really choking type gags. I suspect neither try to drink the food

Just a thought on family food. If you look at annabel karmels recipes onlin, she purees things like chicken curry. There is nothing stopping you using family food but whiz with hand blender until 7-8mo.

Thanks! I'll have a look at AK. That's interesting about babies 'drinking' purees, I hadn't heard that. It doesn't apply to dd as she chews hers (I wonder whether my home-made stuff is thicker than the pouches or jars you can buy) and moves the food around her mouth as you'd expect, but then perhaps it's just because she's so used to being sick. She was an early baby as well so maybe things are just a bit governed by all that.
