Hi bear with me am v sleep deprived! We had smoked cod for dinner last night and so fed it to 6 month old (and 2 year old) for lunch today. Last night I did ask DH (who bought it) isnt it too salty for them and he said its fine. But am just looking at weaning book now to prepare dinner and it says no smoked food under 1 due to salt levels. Am now panicking that baby will have salt poisoning - he would have had a teaspoon maybe total of it, would that be a problem? and what are the signs to look out for?
wish i wasnt a rubbish mummy :-(

It'll be fine. Don't worry. The amount will be neglible.

Honestly, don't worry. There wouldn't have been much salt in a teaspoon teaspoon of smoked fish!. He might be a bit thirsty but he'll be fine.

Do some reading about what salt poisoning really is. The amount you gave your child is tiny, and there's no cause for concern. Don't beat yourself up - just find out what salt poisoning would actually entail. Then feel better about yourself!

of course it is ok. A little bit extra salt on one day just means give less the next day.

thanks everyone just googling but keep just finding that story about the lady that killed her baby!!! Symptoms apparently are 'excessive thirst, change in mental state, and muscle twitching or stiffness' so will look out for that and try and give him some more water ....

You'd have to feed huge quantities of salt to cause poisoning! There really is nothing to worry about.

As others have said, you cannot possibly have given her enough salt to cause a problem, so try and relax about it if you can. You don't need to monitor her for symptoms.

The rule for babies is 1g or less of salt per day, not not salt at all. And as already mentioned, if one meal was more salty than usual then just reduce the salt levels for the next few meals to average it out.

There's no need to look out for anything. I absolutely promise you have not poisoned your baby with a teaspoon of smoked cod. I promise.
