Weaning

Quorn

I'm thinking a bit in advance here as dd only 22wks tomorrow but was wondering if anyone has used Qourn as a weaning food, esp in relation to blw?

I'm vegetarian and not really bothered if dd eats meat or not but it would be easier for me to give her a few Quorn chunks than to have to prepare some meat for her.

Cut and pasting one of my posts from another thread because I can't be bothered to type it all in again

I can give you Marlowe Foods reaction to this, if it helps (they are the makers of Quorn). My dh was working on a production facility there when I was pregnant with dd and asked them what their recommendation would be. They said that they do not recommend it to be used regularly before the age of 2, although occasional use from 12 months is OK. They don't recommend it because it's very low in fat and very high in fibre, so it's not really suitable to use as an everyday food for young children. It's also very, very highly processed.

It also contains a lot of egg, which many parents like to avoid until later on.

I stayed away from Quorn with my lo while weaning(veggie household) because it contains egg white (but can't remember how old they have to be to have egg) and salt.

She's 2.5 now so have relaxed and she eats Quorn sausages.

Thanks ProY and WWB. I guess that means I'll be leaving it a while then .

There's plenty of other protein you can give her, though - you don't have to give her meat if you don't want to cook it. Lentils, chick-peas, all kinds of beans, pulses, cheeses are all OK from 9 months or so. Tofu is OK from 12 months (I think) as well, if you eat that.

Yeah, pulses are great finger food once they've got the pincer grip. DD had a phase of only eating round food, ie peas, sweetcorn and chick peas.

does anyone know why tofu is only from 12 months? i had just bought some to give to dd at 10 months but i won't if it's not the right thing to do.
(i am inspired by my friend who's favourite 'treat' tea at 7 years old is beans and toast with tofu mixed into the beans.)

Just wanted to add that I'm REALLY allergic to Quorn. I'm veggie and it's the only thing I'm allergic to (I've only ever eaten it 4 times and the reaction is worse each time). I'd never realised it was one of those things you could be allergic to - but I've not given it to dd just in case. Definitely worth watching her after she's eaten it!

DD has Quorn mince Spag Bol leftovers sometimes, I waited until she was over 12months, but she's been fine with it.

Aitch, I've just checked with the Vegetarian Society's website and my memory on tofu is obviously not right - they reckon tofu is OK to start introducing between 6 - 8 months.

okay, thanks WWB. any ideas for what to do with tofu (in a BLW stylee) or should i start another thread?
i was thinking of doing it with a stir fry or making some spicy-ish butternut squash soup and dropping it in.

Thanks for all of the ideas. My diet is probably a bit rubbish with most of my protein from cheese which I love, Quorn and then only a tiny bit from pulses. Will have to start thinking harder about what I'm going to feed dd.

Aitch, I only used tofu once for dd, marinated and stir-fried - she didn't like it and I don't eat it, so I never bothered with it for her again. I'd think you'd be OK to use it in pretty much anything really.
