Help, I'm drowning my baby!

DS was EBF until 6 months when we starting BLW. For water drinking we tried a Tommy Tippee Basic Free-flow Sippy Cup and a Doidy Cup. He seemed to struggle with the concept of sucking from a spout and found the open rim easy so we went with the Doidy Cup.
DS is now 9 months old and it seems somewhere along the line we've gone horribly wrong! I can't work out how or when but now I don't know what to do!
When DS needs a drink, I offer the cup, he puts his hands on the handles and I tip. He doesn't seem to be able to tip the cup himself. When he drinks, it's as if he drinks for too long and ends up choking because he needs to breathe before he's swallowed. If I try to take the cup away mid-drink though he really grips the handles to stop me. This isn't a once in a while occurrence, it's every time he drinks.
I tried a no spill cup (a spouted one and a straw one) but DS can't work out that he needs to suck and I don't know how to teach him. If I show him, he just sits looking at me and laughing!
Ideally I'd like DS to be able to help himself to a drink (or am I being over ambitious, is he too young?) but more than anything I'd like to put an end to the water-boarding!
There are so many different types of cups, I'm a bit lost really. Any ideas on what type to try or a better way of using one of the ones I have?

Only put a tiny bit of water in the doidy cup and refill as necessary.

Can you tip the doody away from his mouth but not actually take it away?

Just put less water in doidy cup and show him how to do it gently.

You can refill as needed

Get a waterproof bib so if you just put a tiny but in you can let him do it himself

ideally you need a carton of something with a straw to help to learn how to use it as you can then squeeze the carton a bit to get the liquid up the straw. You can get cartons of milk/juices to try it out

We had a cup like this for DS1 and it was great - they do have to suck a bit but it's from the rim so slightly more like drinking from a proper cup (if that makes sense): www.anywayup.com/baby-products/anywayup/18-360-toddler.html

DS was always a splutterer when drinking!

Ds is 14 months and can't work out how to pick up a cup and drink out of it unless he is lying down and it's a spout cup, but from about 10 months I taught him how to drink from a straw so now has straw cups that he can drink whenever he wants. I've found the nuby ones work best and are the easiest to clean.

Just remembered the other thing I did. I gave mine a plastic cup of milk in the bath. That way they get used to drinking it by themself and spills don't matter. The naively of having it in the bath usually helps too Smile

I taught mine to suck from a spout first by sucking the yoghurty type pouches, then innocent smoothie from a straw cup, then water from a freeflow sippy cup.
