Worried about milk/bottles after turning one!

Hi all

DD is 11 months, on neocate and is due to start nursery in a month. I've been reading up and see that once they are one, babies should no longer drink from a bottle.
DD has 3 bottles a day (usually 6/7 oz each) and refuses to take the neocate from a beaker or cup. She'll happily sip water from a beaker, usually a few gulps before she just plays around!
Anyway, I've been thinking about cutting her afternoon bottle but she still seems to be hungry for it. Questions are:

  1. Is the nursery going to have any issue with giving a bottle to a 12 month old?
  2. Is it really that bad for them to drink milk from bottles past 12 months?
  3. How am I best weaning her off her afternoon bottle? Thinking I'll try to ditch that one and then work on the others! Hopefully by then I can give soya milk etc.

Any tips are appreciated! Thanks.

The nursery should be happy to give bottles if that's what you want/she's used to.

The issue with bottles is that milk pools around the teeth and can cause tooth decay. The important things are that the milk is drunk in one go rather than the child sucking on a bottle for hours, teeth are cleaned after the bottle at bedtime and the child doesn't have a bottle to sleep with/in their cot overnight.

It's up to you if you want to drop the afternoon bottle. You could just start offering it in a beaker and she might become used to it.

DD ended up having a bedtime bottle til she was 3.
You pay the nursery so I would presume they will do as you ask.
She is teeny. It will all happen in time and I say that as an overthGGinkiGooodGoong stresGooshead.

Thanks for that info, so helpful!! I was thinking of replacing the afternoon bottle with a beaker of soya milk when I can. She definitely doesn't use the bottle as a comforter so that's good!!!
I'm going to keep working on her having more water from the beaker though as she thinks it's a game!

Any tips on what late afternoon snacks I could introduce to fill her up to help cut down on the neocate bottle as much?

Don't stress about bottles - just brush her teeth after them. Dd had an evening bottle til she was 20 months.

The afternoon bottle is probably the best one to ditch first though. Just replace it with water in a beaker, particularly if she thinks it's a game. Then other snacks, fruit, or similar.

DD is 13mo and still has 4 bottles a day if she is offered them! Nursery has really helped, her eating has massively improved so she doesn't need the milk. I give her the baby cereal bar things, fruit, breadsticks, yoghurt - that type of stuff. She only needs snacks if she has had a half day at nursery. A day with me has a slightly later lunch and because I am not at work, a slightly earlier tea.
