Weaning

7 month old only put on 6oz in one month - am I feeding him enough?

I've been weaning since 5 months as DS is not particularly keen on milk and has self weaned himself down to 3 bottles a day already.

2 questions really:

  1. is it normal to have a slow down in weight gain?

  2. am I feeding him enough?

He is eating 3 meals a day:

He eats a relatively big bowl of porridge or weetabix with a mashed banana and I have started offering toast with peanut butter as well for breakfast.

He then has a portion of stew/spag bol/risotto or whatever with a yoghurt or rice pudding for lunch and supper.

I try to offer snacks but they mostly get smeared all over him and the house/pram/highchair/walker.

He has a bottle first in the morning but does not drink very much of it and I make his porridge/weetabix with the remainder.

He'll take another bottle at 11.00, but won't drink all of it. I then offer another one about 3.30 but it's hit and miss if he'll take it. I've given up with a bottle before bed as I was just throwing milk down the sink, but he will drink most of his dream feed.

Any thoughts/experience would be greatly appreciated.

Is he still following the same centile? Ds is the same age and has only put on 7oz in the past month. He is still on the same centile though. He is down to 3 7oz bottles a day. I think once babies get to 4 months the rate of weight gain slows down a lot.

Hi smokeandfluff he has popped back down to the 25th centile having just gone up to in between the 25th & 50th centile - so not too much of a problem...

Thanks for getting back to me xx

Weight gain definitely slows at this age. I just had my 8mo if he's out on 1lb 2 in just under two months, so your 6oz doesn't sounds wildly inappropriate. Is your son also loving around more? Crawling or rolling about? I've noticed a bit if a growth length ways lately, and a bit of slimming down.

Agree with others, as long as he's following his centile, is bright and alert at times and is meeting his milestones it should be ok.

Do you reckon he's getting the minimum 20floz of first stage milk a day? Smile

DS did the same at this age. Just slowed down as he was busy crawling. Sounds like he's enjoying solids!
