Hi there,

My dd has been happily pushing fruit and steamed veg around her face and kitchen for a couple of weeks. All is going well, but I'm confused about when to introduce wheat (the problem is gluten I'm assuming) and dairy products.

Have searched through lots of material and threads and it seems like some people are giving toast with butter, cheese, pasta, honey and yoghurt fairly early on. Yet I've seen guidelines to avoid wheat, honey and dairy until a year old.

So what's the deal? How long should I be waiting? I'm dying to give her some of the stuff that I eat. Yeah I'm lazy.

All thoughts appreciated.

Wait till 1 yr old to give honey. Wheat and dairy I gave from 6mths, but some people maybe avoid it if there is a history of allergies in the family.

My ds had his 9 month check the other day. When I sadi tot the HV I'd been avoiding dairy she looked at me very strangly and asked why. She asked if DS had shown an intolerance to it at all. She said unless there is a family history of problems then it's fine to give it to babies once they are over 6 months.

I have been giving wheat since around eight months. also dairy since around 7 months.
honey you should not give until a year.
the only thing I don't give now (at nine months) is eggs - I am going to wait until a year I think.

Honey really is 1yr as there's a small risk of infant botulism with is not nice, and I'd avoid shellfish till then too, but as far as I know everything else is 6mo unless known allergies in the family and/or she has a reaction to it herself.

OK thanks all! I'll definitely steer clear of honey and eggs til 1 year. Anything else she absolutely shouldn't have?

Thank god for mumsnet! So difficult to find information...

I introduced wheat and dairy really slowly - ds was probably 8 months before I even tried. He's ok with both bread and things like philadelphia but was sick when he had proper chunks of cheddar so I haven't tried that again yet, might try it grated next time.

I'm avoiding egg still as I think it doesn't quite agree with him (v sore bottom when he had some pasta which did have egg in) so using wholewheat pasta because it doesn't have egg in - worth checking the ingredients on things like that. However, apparently it's the white which is the allergen so you could try just the yolk.

Isn't strawberries a year thing too?

well i must admit i gave dd strawberries last week and she loved them! don't know if she actually swallowed anything... but have read subsequently that strawberries and kiwi are a no go. not sure why... i'll avoid them for a bit.

Hmm, didn't know that strawberries and kiwi were a year but I do know that they contain a protein that can cross react so that people who have latex allergy can be allergic to them too and the rates of latex allergy are increasing loads. Maybe there is a connection?

it is all SO confusing isn't it? one of my friends just had to rush her exclusively bf-ed son to hospital because he suddenly took an allergic reaction to dairy and egg.
i was going to give dd some egg soon but i think i'll give it a miss now.
she's had bread since 6 months, although not every day. no strawbs, no tomatoes apart from a wee bit of cooked spag blog (actually my friend's hub is a paediatrician and he said that a good rule of thumb is nothing red til a year, but then he only sees the A&E cases i suppose). no shellfish, obviously, but she probably eats quite a lot of cheese. (pigeonpie, sometimes i grate it just for fun as she likes picking it up that way).

there's a list of things on the blog here , it's really for allergicky babies but i've taken the bits that i think are easy enough to avoid, iykwim?

I was going to avoid egg until 9 months but I'm partway through introducing it a few weeks early. My little one had mashed hard-boiled egg yolk on toast a few days ago. And today he's had pieces of hard-boiled egg white. I also introduced citrus last week, which was another that I had originally planned to wait until 9 months.
I think he was about 7 months when I introduced kiwi, strawberries and tomato. This was shortly after introducing dairy and wheat.
I'm waiting till a year to introduce peanuts, shellfish and honey.

Thanks for all the replies! The 'nothing red' sounds like a good rule.

I've scoured your blog Aitch and have to say it's generally my bible. Just wasn't sure of the actual timing of introducing foods.

I gave her a bit of whole wheat spagetti today which was funny - she waved it around, spagetti slapping all over the kitchen. don't think ANY of it went in...

there's actually a chart which you can access on the top right hand side of the blog page which includes all the timings. i think it's an american thing, cos it mentions yam A LOT.
and of course i've realised that i've already broken the 'no red' rule with red pepper. just as well dd doesn't like it much...

thanks - found it! well i might give her toast and see how she copes. there aren't any allergies in our family, so i don't think she's particularly prone. and had no reactions so far...

yeah, that's the same as us (well, my wee sis has allergies but that's all.) so i'm basically not stressing about it too much but if it's easy not to give her a kiwi (which it is, as i find them disgusting) or a strawberry (which it is, as i find them all too delicious...) then i'm not doing.
the porridge pancakes are good, as are Mawbroon's oatcakes. they are amazingly good, actually. i think i like them more than the baby...

my DS (9 months) is allergic to dairy and egg and is deemed an allergicky type. i have given gluten, red pepper, tomatoes, salmon, tuna, cod with no reactions. i will avoid shellfish until much later and of course nuts. i did find out the other day that he is allergic to chinese five spice, as he got hives and was sick after eating a breaded chicken peice(recipe from aitchs blog) that i had flavoured with five spice. strange but hey ho.

Report
aitch71 · 31/08/2006 14:02

so let's be clear about this vnmum... it's not that my chicken recipe is rotten, is it?

Report
vnmum · 31/08/2006 14:58

no your recipe is great, i just added five spice to the bread mix and ds reacted to that. i was just trying to add different flavours. sorry if it came across like that, it wasnt what i meant at all.

have you tried my recipes yet? im going to try the oatcakes too seen as you say they are very nice

Report
aitch71 · 31/08/2006 15:08

i was TOTALLY just joking. sorry if i came across as anything else.

have put the recipes up but not tried them yet... someone has already been asking about them and your baby's age on the blog so you'd better get over there double-quick. your public needs you...
