Portion size???

My DD is 5 months and we have started on some solids. We just do one "meal" a day at the mo - after her 11 am bottle I offer some baby rice and milk and we've also tried her on puréed potato and carrot. She loves both but how much of it am I meant to give?

She has a bottle and usually manages about 6oz until she's fed up of it or won't have any more. Then we go and sit at the kitchen table and have some food. But she just keeps eating! She seemed to have loads of her solids today and would just open her mouth for the spoon for more and swallow the food I put in there. I've read things that say baby will let you know when she's full.

Is she genuinely not full?? Should I keep going until she won't have anymore or give her a small portion and stop? I worry also that she's filling up on the solids too much and then won't be bothered about her bottle later in the day and end up malnourished or dehydrated :(

I would give a small portion and stop especially as she is only 5 months old.

I'm not sure of the answer but I started at 23 weeks and at 24 he's happily munching porridge in the morning, fruit purée at lunch and puréed veg at tea, at least an ounce each time (and trying to get anything I have on my plate!) - I have the same worry but he kicks his feet wanting more and got mad when we ran out of carrot/baby rice today. Presumably it's a case of going with it and he's not going to get malnourished by having too much?

Hi Kola, when you say she's having loads, how much do you mean? I'd mentioned the same to others about ds who is 5.5 months but my version of loads (prob 15-20 shallow baby spoons, each much less than full) wasn't the same as theirs (a whole pot of yoghurt).

Also, I looked up the size of their stomach and it's apparently always approximately the size of your fist. I doubt that's a medical definition but it's helped me gain perspective

Oh and Hv suggested putting a baby beaker out for him with water inside, could allay dehydration fears (though milk is still obv pref)

Cheers mustard - the thing is just how ambiguous it all is. A yogurt pot? Are we talking a little petit filous? Or like a muller light? I think in terms of spoon fulls, she has about 15-20 spoons and then I stop at that.

I'll measure a portion today!

Also, I thought my stomach was the size of my fist, surely hers is smaller?

it will be the size of your lo's fist not your fist.

Ok I measured today. She had about 6 and half oz of her bottle. Then I made her half a rusk with some of her milk and some apple and pear purée all mushed together. It weighed about 64 grams. She ate about 50 grams of it then I stopped because she seemed like she was getting fed up.

Does that seem ok??

My ds was like this, he could eat way more than I expected. I let myself be guided by him on the advice of the hv. She assured me it wouldn't harm him, she said if they have too much they will be sick. He is 2 now and his appetite did settle. As she is still young for weaning maybe make sure whatever you give her doesn't reduce her milk feeds yet, but it might just be a case of trial and error. They change so quickly at that age! If she stopped part way through her portion yesterday it sounds like she does know when she is finished. Just try and follow her cues and enjoy it, I love the weaning stage!
