Is there anything like Rusks but without all the sugar?

My 10 month old DS is going through a furious teething episode and currently won't eat his dinner, but really craves something hard to chomp on for his gums. I gave him a rusk because I wanted to give him something to satisfy that need and also to fill up his tummy so that I could give him ibuprofen at bed time without it upsetting his stomach but I don't want to give them to him regularly as they are full of sugar. He loves Biccypegs for the relief they give him, but obviously they are purely for that reason and not a meal. Is there anything similar but more healthy that I can give him instead?

I made my own low sugar rusks. You'll find plenty of recipes on google. Looking back though, that was the high water mark of my PFBness! DC2 got farleys.

I was thinking about getting low sugar Farley's but if they are easy to make I may have a go. He is my PFB, after all Wink. Also, he has 6 teeth and won't let us brush them at the moment so wanted to steer clear of too much sugar. He gets a fair amount through fruit as it is. He's being very picky with food just because of his teething and being a bit grotty with a cold so often I end up giving him a banana for tea when he won't eat any of the veg I've made. I'm also worried that if I just give him more sugary stuff he'll refuse veg and just eat sweet stuff.

Organix rusks? Can't remember what they are called, but in purple pack for original flavour and yellow pack for banana. They are sometimes hard to get.

I've got them for my dcs, the oldest are 7 and 5 and they still have them Smile

Not hard, but a brush baby might give him some relief and have the additional benefit of cleaning his existing teeth.

He has a brush baby which does help a lot. Thanks

I have the Organix biscuits. I didn't know they did rusks. I'll have a look for those.

Teething is miserable isn't it? This set have been giving him grief since early December and haven't even had the courtesy to show up yet!

Soft rusks and hard rusks. They are not called rusks, but I certainly used them before 12 months with mine.

Also toast that is hardened in the oven (may be an annabel karmel recipie).

Breadsticks? Might be some decent ones out there with low salt?

We went on holiday to France last year and I was surprised at all the biscuits marketed at babies that had sugar and chocolate on them, made the risk offerings in the uk positively healthy!

They are terrible aren't they? A friend of mine asked me to bring over boxes and boxes of Organix cereal for her babies as all the stuff in Spain was also packed with sugar. I must remember to take some sugar free stuff with me when I go on holiday.

Thanks for the ideas. I don't think Organix do the rusks anymore but I might try the toast thing.

As someone has aleeady mentioned above, Farleys now do a Reduced Sugar version of their rusks. They're not sugar free but they're enriched with iron etc which I don't think you'd get if you make sure own...? but that's probably not an issue for you if your little one is fully on solids now rather than just having the occasional nibble :)

Yes, they do the hard rusks and banana rusks.

I hope that worked! They call them banana biscuits, not as hard at the traditional rusks, but they are from 7mth plus.

I recall Ella's house doing some also.... Perhaps they are only from 12 months onwards?

Ahh, I've been giving him those banana biscuits for a while now actually. They are not as substantial as Farley's Rusks though. I was looking for something that I could give him at tea time when he would refuse to eat any other food, just so he had something in his tummy apart from breast milk when I gave him ibuprofen for teething as it can upset the stomach on an empty stomach. I have bought some reduced sugar Farley's which he's eating but not as enthusiastically as the original ones (he's not daft!).

a different suggestion but if he likes banana how about banana on toast. a staple here and the babies love it.

could add peanut butter too if it is a hit.
cucumber and other crudities are good to chew on with sore teeth, or apples.

The low sugar risks still have loads of sugar in them. Banana is a good idea I also think plum have something new
Little Yums?? Which are a biscuit .
