14 weeks always hungry!

My ds is 14 weeks, he was bf for 3 weeks, then ff & ebf until a few weeks ago, now totally ff.
My problem is he is always hungry, i've been giving him hungry baby milk, he drinks a max of 6oz per feed 6 times a day. He feeds nearly every 3 hours.
Today i gave him some baby rice and he seemed so settled! No moaning or anything, he slept really well afterwards.

Is this too early to be giving him babyrice? If yes, what should i do?

Ds1&2 were given rice at 18 weeks.

I think 17 weeks is the absolute earliest that anyone suggests with 26 weeks being the normal suggestion.

I suggest you give him more milk and don't mess with his developing digestive system. baby rice contains nothing useful in any event; whereas milk does.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will come along shortly and endorse this.

Yes, 17 weeks is the absolute earliest with 26 weeks being recommended. However I imagine that's not what you want to hear.

If you want to continue with very early weaning I would strongly advise that you seek the advice of a health care professional eg health visitor or GP. You could also have a read of the NHS advice on weaning plus the mumsnet pages on weaning.

Could you just try giving him milk more often? Also, the hungry baby milk doesn't contain any more calories than normal first milk - it just is harder to digest so makes the baby feel fuller but doesn't give them any more energy.

Is your baby very long by any chance? Agree on seeing your GP if you are thinking of continuing with the solids as 17 weeks is the absolute earliest you should do it.

What happens if you just offer more milk?

Every three hours is not that often. I would probably have a least a drink of water in any three hour period. I would just give more milk and wait a few more weeks.

He is long he's in 6-9 month clothes, i haven't given him any rice today, i tried putting more ounces in the bottle but still the max ds will take is 6oz, i burp him till hes all burped out! So its not that, i offered another bottle 1.5 hours after but he didn't want it so i tried again 2 hours after his feed and he drank another 6oz.

Thats 12 bottles in 24 hours at 5/6oz each ??

I switched to hungry baby milk just to see if it helped, i know its just made with whey or something to make it thicker. He started going about 4 hours in-between feeds but reverted back after a couple of days.

I think i may have given birth to a piglet.

Sometimes the hungry baby milk can make them feed more often in 24 hours, know its odd but I've seen it mentioned more than once on Mn.

How about using first stage milk in the day and up hungry baby milk for bedtime?

Has anyone mentioned feeding on demand to you?

Btw 6floz every 3 hours doesn't sound like a tremendous amount.

If he was breastfed you wouldn't have any idea how many oz he was drinking, and you would just have to feed him when he seemed hungry. Because you can see the amounts he is taking, and there are suggested amounts given on the formula containers, it makes you much more focused on quantities when perhaps that doesn't matter? If you feed him how much formula he wants when he seems hungry then that would seem to be reasonable. I don't think you are in any danger of overfeeding if he makes it clear when he has had enough.

I didn't know it could make them hungrier, i would like to not have to use it, i heard somewhere it can trigger allergies to dairy? Something to do with what is used to make it?

I feel pretty stupid, he's my third child! My other two were both bf so ff is new to me really.

I was looking at the tin, it says ds should be having 7oz 5 times a day so maybe i'll just stop looking!

My elderly neighbor just told me to give him - third of a bottle whole milk, two thirds water and a spoonful of sugar ?? i didnt know if i should re educate her or laugh!

I find with elderly neighbours it is best just to nod and smile!

You are not stupid btw, just perfectly reasonably concerned to do the best thing for your baby.

Is he definitely crying because he's hungry? I only ask because I used to feed DS when he was a baby whenever he cried, but in hindsight, I suspect he was upset about something else...

Defiantly the I am hungry feed me now cry??

I've worked out that he doesn't drink much in the morning, but it goes up through the day, so about 5 he'll have 3oz but by 7pm he'll be having 6oz, even managed a 7oz in the night. He seems more content feeding like this.

Sounds like he is falling into his own pattern. How are you doing with the milk, are you still on the hungry baby stuff? Are you managing to take the guidelines on the tin with a bit of a pinch of salt Smile
