Should I be worried?

Dd is 9 months old and since she was small I have wanted to avoid getting her weighed by health visitors and falling into the trap of stressing if she hadn't followed the right curve. Every now and again I've jumped on the scales with her to check myself - for the first 6 months she raced up through the centiles (from 25th to around 75th). But she's still the same approx weight as she was 3 months ago.

In that time I have stopped bf her during the day, she is starting to eat solids but it's a bit of a struggle to get anything other than sweet potato and yoghurt into her, and she is crawling like a maniac.

She's a really happy, smiley, active little girl and so it hasn't even crossed my mind that things might not be quite right but seeing her weight today has really thrown me.

My logical head is telling me she's just burning loads of energy and her eating hasn't quite caught up yet but I can't help but worry - I'm now in exactly the position I wanted to avoid!!

Does anyone have any ideas about this?

If she hasn't gained any weight in 3 months that could be an issue? How is she apart from that? Is she growing taller? Is she bright and alert at times?

Its good that she is eating solids so well but I'd still try to bf in the day if you can. The current advice is to bf an hour before offering solids until they are one.

Could you talk to a BFC? Is there a Bfing Support Group near to you or could you call one of the helplines?

Thanks for responding. Yes she is growing taller, and she is really bright and alert. It's why I wasn't worried cos she seemed so happy in herself - no lethargy or extra sleeping - and so active.

I had given up bf during the day so she is now on formula & 2 feeds nighttime only. She's having about 450-500ml of formula a day.

Well she's having enough milk then. It might be worth getting her weighed and measured, just so that you have a reference point. No need to ask any questions or take on board any helpful advice if you don't want too. Smile

Thanks - you're right I should probably start monitoring a bit more closely if I think there's a possible issue - I just have good friends who have been given really duff advice and I have a bit of a stubborn streak Wink

It's really important to get your lo weighed on a regular basis. You don't have to stress that she isn't "following the right curve", just as long as her weight is going up! This is the exact reason why you should get her weighed every few weeks, so that if there are any problems you can address them. The health visitors aren't there to judge you, but to help with any problems or questions. Where I am they're really brilliant, I make a note of everything I want to ask them and just swamp them with questions! They really do their best to help and have even offered to come and visit me at home so that we can have a proper chat and take more time. I appreciate it might not be like this where you live but it is so so important. Also she should still be having milk feeds during the day - you say you don't bf her during the day, don't know if you meant milk feeds in general, breast milk or formula. Up until they are 12 months babies get their main nutrients from breast milk or formula so it's still really important to carry on on top of the solid foods.

Well, you ARE clearly worried. I would get her properly weighed and measured every now and then to put your mind at rest. I don't think weighing her on an adult scale with you is always going to be that accurate... I couldn't face seeing my useless HVs regularly so invested in a baby scale (about 20 quid on amazon) and weigh my DS every couple of weeks at the same time of day, naked. It's very reassuring to be able to monitor this, even though he sometimes puts on less weight than he should.

My DD only put on 100 grams in 6 weeks (weighed by HV at 9 months and in hospital at 10.5 months). She is not crawling yet so not using up as much energy as your DD. She has 18oz of formula and eat well during the day. She is 50th centile.

Their weight gain drops dramatically around 8 months so I personally wouldn't be worried, especially if you say she is alert and growing nicely.
