Hi all

Moving to 2nd stage weaning and the receipes in Annabel karmel include chicken and vegetable stock. I have been making my,own purees but draw the line at making my own stock.

Where do people buy appropriate stock cubes from? The usual ones are full of salt and the organic ones have salt too. The tesco and Sainsbury websites don't have them in the baby food section. So where can I find them?

If it's too difficult might just do ellas kitchen to make life easier.

Heinz do a baby stock cube, usually available at Boots if you can't find it in the baby section in the supermarket. We use Kallo low salt cubes, even lower salt than Heinz baby ones. My mum says to just leave out the stock cubes, they make little difference (not sure I agree, but its not worth arguing with her).

I've used Boots own brand ones since weaning DD. They're available in chicken or vegetable versions in store, in the baby food section or on their website.

I think they do a beef version online too but I've never seen it in stores so not tried it.

I use the vegan version of the marigold swiss bouillon- it is very tasty but low in salt. Available at health food shops and supermarkets.

Boots own brand and kallo organic very low beef stock cube (as I couldn't find the boots beef stock cube in a single boots store!) Waitrose sell the kallo stock cubes.

You don't need to use stock at all - water will do.

I've always used Kallo. DH is a chef and was pleasantly surprised by them.

Why don't you just steam sticks of veg and give sticks of roast chicken to suck and nibble on. Honestly you are making it hard for yourself and I bet you'd be pleasantly surprised. Meat juices alone contain lots of goodies so they don't need to eat a whole piece. X

I'm sure the Kallo low salt ones have no added salt.

Having looked at Ocado, Kallo's "very low salt" chicken stock cubes have no added salt and are cheaper than the Boots baby ones.

We used the kallo ones for a while. They don't have much taste. But if baby is eating mush rather than what you're eating it won't matter.

How old is baby?

If 6 months or more, ditch Annabel Karmel and just give baby what you're eating. Honestly, she makes weaning such hard work! There is no need for baby to eat separate food from you unless you only eat ready meals and processed food. If you cook from scratch and don't add salt or honey, baby can eat exactly what you're eating. You don't even need to puree it.

I use the boots ones, however I find they don't have much if any flavour, which is a problem if it's the stock you've used to flavour your risotto! I think I'm going to have to take the baby portion out then add some salt for DH and I Wink
