Weaning

Stomach pains

Started our baby boy on solids five days ago. We had tried to wean him at 4 months and he got awful stomach pains from the baby rice. So we took a step back, switched him to hungry baby formula and all was fine.

So starting to wean again a month on. we avoided the baby rice and just put him on a small amount of puréed pear. All seemed fine so went from one half portion a day to two (11am and 6pm). All seemed fine.

After 5 days of pear I introduced puréed carrot at the 11am feed yesterday - he just loved it. I just gave him a half portion though, and then a half portion of pear at tea time.

Well we've been up half the night with him having stomach cramps (pulling knees up, moaning). He's grand now, playing away. But I'm uncertain as to what to do next. Obviously I don't want to give him any more carrot (as much as he loved it) but he can't live on pear alone.

If anyone has any suggestions or even just similar experiences I'd love to hear from you. I have some sweet potato I could try. He does have silent reflux and is on Gaviscon and Losec. Maybe I need to take him to the doctor for his advice.

Thanks in advance for any ideas. It's awful to see him in pain like that but he has to eat too - it would be very difficult to pull him back now and he was fine on the pear. Just don't know where to go next.

Is there a reason for weaning him early, before 6 months? Was it as a result of advice from a GP/HV/paediatrician? If so, I would suggest going back to them and discussing it as you have outlined here.

If not, then perhaps it might be an idea to leave solids until he is 6 months. There's no rush to get him eating - you've got plenty of time until he is 1yr ish and should be eating mainly solid food.

Sweet potato can cause constipation so you might want to avoid that. He doesn't have to "live on pear alone" - his formula milk should be his main source of nutrition before 6 months, gradually switching to solids by the time he is 1.

Agree, it just doesn't sound like he's ready. Unless a Paed has advices you to wean I'd leave it for a while, no point in making him distressed Smile

If you leave weaning until he shows the signs if readiness it will be much easier for him and for you too Smile

Have you read the Mn weaning info? Its very good.
