Weaning a 4 month old with CMA, Lactose intolerant and severe gastro reflux disease(14 Posts)
@ OpheliasWeepingWillow, sorry not been on her for a while, had a lot going on, little one been very unwell but weaning going well, still no luck with the hospital, they don't seem to want to refer me to a dietician or prescribe other foods, i've put in a complaint so now just waiting for response, i really have no idea how to DM you as i am new to all this if the offer is still on i'd like to take you up on it please xx
I have some Neocate spoon packets I can send you for free if you DM me.
My dd has all the issues you raise but is allergic to rice and bananas and god knows what else. Make sure you introduce a new food only every three days to watch for reactions. Avoid gluten and soy and please get a referral to a dietician.
Maybe this thread will help, I know you're not trying vegan ism but seeing as weaning a vegan baby excludes dairy it could be useful?
@ discrete, many thanks for your response, I've started the baby rice, the vomiting has lessened dramatically, still have some come up but nothing compared to before, your feeding tips are gratefully received, that's where i was struggling, wasn't sure how to start or what to give, yes i'm with you on that, it is the hardest thing I've ever been through, thank you all for your input
We had exactly the same with ds1, and the paed (a specialist in reflux) told us to do this:
A few spoonfuls of baby rice before every milk feed.
Introduce a new food every three days, to see if he reacts negatively to one of them.
Savoury at lunch, fruit in the evening.
Fruit: home made pureed apple, pear, banana to start with.
Savoury: home made potato puree, then add 50% of carrot (very well boiled), then iirc squash fennel erm....sorry, I can't remember (but you get the general idea, very cooked bland vegetables mixed with potato puree).
Immediately after that, start mixing it with some meat. Chicken breast, cooked pork or lamb (not beef of course).
Ds1 also did really well with avocados.
FWIW, ds1's weight picked up dramatically once he was on solids and on the drugs. He went from being off the bottom of the charts at 4 months to being on the 90th percentile by the time he was a year old! He also came off the drugs completely by the time he was 6mo.
It's hell being where you are and it was the hardest thing I ever went through, but it can and does get better from here.
Thanks to all for your advice, we have hospital this Thursday so i will be asking for referral to a dietitian and also for some Neocate spoon, tried her on baby rice this morning, she loved it and took it very well, she could do with some at every feed but am thinking that might be too much for her little stomach at the moment, how did you ladies do it??
I'm surprised you haven't already sen a dietitian. You should ask for a referral.
My dcs have allergies-ds1 very severely.
Ask gp for neocate spoon it is a specific weaning food with a porridgey consistency as my ds and dd had reflux and kept it down. It was really good.
Also things like potato, baby rice anything non acidic and a bit thicker tended to stay down for longer.
Oh dear, sounds awful.
I would strongly suggest asking to see a paediatrician for the weaning, they have been brilliant with mine.
Also, have you looked on the allery boards, there is a lot of info on there. I am also in a Facebook group called CAN - for children with allergies. There are some great people on there who can give you better advice than I have.
Thank you GirlOutNumbered for your help, her pediatrician hasn't mentioned a dietitian, I've just been left to get on with it at the moment, she's bringing up so much formula between feeds that they think weaning might keep her full for longer and she'll want less formula therefor less to bring up, am willing to try anything at this moment in time, she's my 5th child, my 4 older ones never had anything like this at all so i'm lost as to what to do but really don't want to make her worse, she hasn't gained any weight at all this past week, they weigh her weekly as she was putting on a little and losing it again, its been a real struggle for us as parents to have to see her go through this, her smile just melts our hearts and her screaming in pain just rips at our hearts, she's also on max dose of domperidome, rinitadine and omeprazole (probably all spelt wrong lol) we have bought her one of those reflux wedge pillows with anti-roll bars, tried all the different bottles for colic just to see if anything made any difference but its not getting any better, she is now on neocate but has had cow and gate pepti junior and nutramigen, these formulas haven't eased the vomiting and diarrhea she's had since birth. There must be something out there that can help surely??
Sorry, yes I see he did.... and sorry for the multiple messages!
My paediatrician put my in touch with the paediatric dietician and she gave me loads of information. Both sons still see them.
You should ask to see one. They dont sound very helpful.
By the way, solid food won't really help baby put on weight. There is far more calories in milk than in a pureed apple. Did the Dr recommend you start weaning?
I have weaned one DS (now 2.7) with CMA and am in the process of weaning another! DS2 has reflux, but doesnt suffer with it when not on milk, so I dont know how helpful I can be.
I started with baby rice, which although I know people dont really like, I found it easy to mix with breastmilk to get them started.
Then I just gave fruits and vegetables. I introduced them one at a time, so for a day just gave some carrots, then pear etc etc. Then I could see if anything upset him. For instance, he does not seem to be able to tolerate Corn.
I buy my bread from the bakers, to ensure that I know whats in it and most of everything else I buy myself. I ALWAYS read the labels if I am buying jars.
IF you have any specific questions, just ask.
