Refusing protein

Dd (10mo) has been really poorly over the last couple of weeks, she's had a prolonged sickness bug and has been totally off her food.

She's better now but refusing to eat any protein - she'll only eat fruit, veg, bread, baby biscuits and rice cakes. I've tried meat, fish, eggs, lentils and cheese both as finger food and purees but she just gags and spits it out.

Help! I'm worried it will be bad for her development. Thanks

We're veggie so I've always tried to ensure my little lady gets enough protein in her diet. I presume that your DD is still taking milk in her diet so I'm sure that she is getting lots of protein there. But if you are still worried, what about trying:
-nutter butters (cashew, almond etc) on her bread
-yoghurts and other diary desserts
-tofu either cooked as finger food (although she may not like the texture) or in a sugar free mousse (such as chocolate and prune mousse

I did a bit of research on protein and posted it here: nutritional info on protein. I found it helpful to realise that they don't actually need so much e.g. 2 slices of wholemeal bread would provide enough protein for a 10kg child.

There is protein in every plant cell.

Thanks!

Is nutter butter a brand? Where can I buy it? Can she have nuts under age 1?

She just rejected my lentil bake (her favourite, usually) but wolfed down a sachet of Ella's kitchen and two yoghurts! So depressing to have your lovely home cooking rejected in favour of some bland, processed junk.

A quick Google tells me nutter butter is a brand, but I think the pp just meant nut butters. You can pick these up easily at a health food store. I believe nuts are fine for under ones, it's the choking thing you need to watch, so no big chunks of nut.
I am not a professional nutritionist, please note. I am not a professional NUTritionist either! :)

We don't ever have 'baby food' in the house, so my DS has to eat what's there. And they will eat, if they are hungry!
Sometimes he prefers mushier stuff, like yoghurt, though we didn't do puréed stuff as such. Either he has been teething, or just has a preference for it that day.

Total greek yoghurt as it has a ton of protein in it for a yoghurt. I mention that brand as most of the other greek style ones had lots less. I had similar aversion to your DD when preg and dosed out on it.

My DD barely ate any protein until she was about 18 months old when she broke her self imposed almost-vegetarianism by scoffing cocktail sausages at a party.

I worried until I found out she was drinking enough milk to provide sufficient protein. I just kept trying a variety of foods and see what took.

I think nutter butter should be a brand- what a great name!- but I wrote it by mistake. I actually did just mean nut butters as Lentil says. There are loads of different types available at health food shops. I offered them from a young age (i.e. before 1) and she has been eating them ever since.

Sainsburys has the meridian nut butters. Not sure why I haven't seen them in other supermarkets!
