BLW - transitioning to spoon?

Been successfully BLW my now 8 month old for 2 months and she's a star. Won't let me hold the spoon except to load, eats everything etc.

What I am wondering is how to transition to her independently loading the spoon. Does this just happen if I keep giving her the spoon or do I need to actively encourage? Would be interesting to hear from others at what ages that happened for their children?

Hello, DS is 15 months and loads his own spoon and fork. I forget how old he was when he started doing it on his own, but he is very good at it now.

We always gave him a couple of spoons to mess around with, some loaded with food and others without.

Thanks! If you forget what age must have been a pretty easy transition.

DS was over a year when he started, about 14 months. One day he just picked up the spoon and started using it properly and didn't want anyone else to feed him.

Just give them a spoon of their own and let them get on with it Smile with dc1, it didn't occur to us so he had one from 15 months. It didn't take him too long master it thoughSmile Dc2 wanted to be like her big brother from the start so has always had her own spoon and 'got it' at around 13 months or so.

I think DD started grabbing the spoon from me around 10 months to have a go. At 15 months now she can spoon herself a bowl of cereal, pot of yoghurt etc and is beginning to get the hang of stabbing with a fork. I got her a spoon and fork with angled heads from Boots, which had helped massively with getting the food where it is going. At her age her bones are still not strong enough to bend her wrist properly by herself to direct the spoon into her mouth.

My lo has been able to eat with loaded spoons since about 7 months honestly the first time he ever had food he grabbed it to do it himself he's now 13 mo and loads them himself and uses a fork.......though he is a human dustbin who can't get it down him quick enough Grin

Thanks all, I also have a dustbin, but it looks like it'll be a few months yet before she's loading herself....
