Weaning

quick beans / pulses question

As a veggie, I am wanting inspiration as to what to provide for just weaned nearly 6 month old. He has had lots of lumpy veggie purees, and tends to really enjoy parsnip/pot/swede with other green veggies mashed in and a bit of cheese. But just wondering if I can give mashed chickpeas for instance, or canellini / kidney beans? Gave him some brown rice (cooked till it was very stodgy) risotto kind of a thing with peppers and mushroom (and the inevitable cheese) which he absolutely loved but the rice clogged him up a bit. Any other ideas for a veggie baby?

I give ds quite a lot of lentals in cassoroles. I was wondering about kidney beans too. Wanted to make a mince free, chilli free, chilli!

I give mine lentils and beans but put other stuff in too as it may be a bit too bulky for their tummies otherwise. So perhaps add some puy lentils or red lentils to a veggie mush to see how that goes down.

I'm sure chickpeas would be fine too, in smallish quantities.

Thanks for your input, guess I will have to experiment. Grin

I haven't tried chickpeas yet, but I have done lentil soup, which has proved to be a favourite, and chilli con carne - complete with the meat and the chillies! I do add plenty of yoghurt though, and I don't make it that hot to start with - I prefer it flavourful rather than blow-your-head-off hot. I started to introduce it after about 8 months, because that waswhen I introduced beef. But she had had foods with garlic and spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon before then.

I would say, just offer a taste of things and she how your ds gets on. My dd actually seems to prefer well-flavoured foods - anything too bland and she tends to turn her nose up at it.

I would say, though - if you do give kidney beans, mash them a little with the back of a fork, just to break the skins. Dd will eat them whole quite happily, but if she doesn't chew well enough, they have a tendency to come out the other end whole, as well!!!!! Blush

Oooh Jennywren, what do you put in your chilli? And do you add the yoghurt to the chilli?
And how old is your dd when you first gave it to her?

Houmus, yes, tried this with DD and she liked it. In fact I'm doing a chickpea recipe at the moment.
