Do I have to sterlise ice cube trays and spoons etc?

DS is 5 1/2 months and I'm just starting to wean him on baby rice, carrot puree etc. Do I have to sterilse the ice cube tray, the spoon and the bowls that I put the ready puree in? Seems a bit strange when he's putting everything he can get his hands on in his mouth at the moment! Also, unrelated question but can I put sweet potato in the blender or will that make it all starchy as with normal potato meaning that I have to hand mash it? Mucho gracias!

i would imagine that pouring boiling water on it after washing would be sufficient.

Personally, I didn't, as there's no real crevices for milk to get into as there is with teats. I just wash very well by hand in hot soapy water and DS has never had an upset stomach.

I would hand mash sweet potato, it's easier and will still go to the right consistency with a bit of water/milk.

Happy weaning!

Once they start putting all and sundry in their mouths, I wouldn't worry so much about sterilising. Just make sure everything is washed in nice hot water. If you have a dishwasher, I think that pretty much works as a steriliser anyway.

I'm sure that you need to hand mash sweet potato too, I think it goes all gross and wall paper pastey the same as ordinary ones Smile

I think the advice is to sterilize everything until they are 6 months - but I think this is a bit OTT! You only are advised to sterilize teats and anything to do with milk until one.

IMO as long as you make sure they are well washed be that dishwasher/hot water washing etc then this should be O.K. I've got a microwave sterilizer so obviously never sterilized anything metal like mashers etc.

Like you said, it seems daft when a whole manner of rubbish is chewed on. Smile

I just used hot soapy water. You are right that's it's a bit redundant to sterilise when they are mouthing everything (provided there aren't any bits of food lurking that bacteria could breed in).

Mash the sweet potato by hand, it is virtually mush anyway.
