Dumfries and Galloway - and in particular Wigtown Bay - what is there to do?

We are off to Wigtown bay near Dumfries and Galloway next week and I was wondering if anyone knew what there is locally to do there. I have a 7 year old DS and am looking for good beaches, things to do if it is raining and anything else that may be enjoyable for a family day out. Is anyone familiar with this area?

Cream o' Galloway - ice cream farm and activity centre, my kids (6, 10 &12) all love it, lots of outdoor playareas (all home made!) an indoor play area, ice cream factory tour and country walks.

Mabie farm, much more than a farm. Hay barn, qudbikes for little ones, grass ledging etc etc.

Both the above easily kill a day.

We tend not to do beaches as we are there at Easter each year but I seem to remember there some decent beaches new Wigtown anyway so you should be OK.

Oooh - sod DS - the ice cream factory sounds great for me lol. Especially if we can get wild and wonderful flavours of icecream.

Would this and Mabie farm be ok for wet days too, apparently it is going to rain next week. I knew I should have booked it for this week - very nearly did but decided the later the better for good weather

Thanks Dadinsteadofmum1

Anyone else got any ideas?

DEpends on how wet, both are mainly outside with indoors bits, so if you are talking showers then yes, if you are talking one of those delightful days I have too often suffered in this part of Scotland where is feels like the whole atmosphere is solid water and why the hell didn't we go to the south of France [breathe] then go to the cinema in Dumfries.

Another vote for Cream o galloway. so good. if you book ahead you can book a place on the farm tour that only happens on certain days.

BMX track and pedalo's on the loch at Castle Douglas.

We spent a day in tipping rain at Mabie farm last autumn, it was fine - the wet made the downhill sledge thing much faster, there was plenty to door indoors and with good waterproofs the kids were happy in and out. Meant we more or less had the place to ourselves too. It's a great day out.

There's a chocolate factory nearby too, which did a great chocolate making session.
