which areas in Edinburgh would you NOT stay in?

my cousin is going to spend a week there in July. SHe's going to rent a place, but not sure where to get one,. she wants to be nearish the train station (either one). are there areas that are safer than others for a woman on her own?

Oooh Edinburgh, it's all good there. There are some nice places to rent in the old and the new town. All within walking distance of the train station.

central edinburgh is all pretty safe. There are a few dodgy areas but they are all further out of town.

near haymarket...Dalry, ardmillan, polwarth (a bit further away) and fountainbridge
Near Waverly...Leith walk, Broughton, clerk st, nicholson st, st leonards, pleasance
not too far away...morningside, tollcross, bruntsfield

but seriously, anywhere, she'll be fine.

That would be fine. Central Edinburgh is very compact.

cool. thank you all for your help. she's staying with me in falkirk for a bit as well but due to unforseen circumstances has an extra week here so has decided to spend some time in the capital. (and i might just get to go spend a couple child-free days with her as well!!)

There are some slightly dodgy areas around the Holyrood end of the Royal Mile, I'd probably steer clear of Dumbiedykes TBH.

There's a really good vegetarian Indian restaurent called Ann Purna on St Patrick's Sq which is pretty cheap and does the best curry I've ever had.

I wouldn't stay down the bottom of the mile. It's the back end of Waverley, there's some dodgy pubs and a lot of druggie types hanging around.

Bruntsfield, Morningside, Polwarth, Marchmont all v nice and have frequent buses to Waverley.

Tell her not to walk alone around Tollcross at night or up though the short cut from there to the Grassmarket.

NEVER walk acorss the Meadows at night, or go up Calton Hill at dusk/dark.
