Good places to eat around Taunton

I want to take DH out for dinner for his birthday, leaving kids with my parents who live near Taunton. We haven't lived in Somerset long and I don't know many good places. Have been to Halfway House in Pitney and Canal Inn in Wrantage. Dh prefers country pubs to restaurants in town but could be persuaded.

Any ideas? We don't want to drive more than 20-30 mins from Taunton if poss.

The Seedhouse at Old Kelways, Langport (just follow the road away from Wrantage/Taunton) and it's on the left as you drive out of Langport (after Tesco and the petrol station).

They do lovely food in the evenings and delicious sunday roasts too. They even have lodge rooms if you leave the kids with your parents!!!

Or if you want something really special, there's The Castle restaurant in Taunton (where Gary Rhodes used to work).

The old mexican in taunton is lovely.

Out of taunton, The blue Ball at Triscombe used to be really nice and the Lamb and Flag in Blagdon Hill but haven't been to either recently.

The Globe at Appley, The Orchard in Trull, One of the pubs in Stoke St Gregory is really nice (I'll get back to you on which when I remember) I'll ask my Mum tomorrow, she's the expert. Don't do Brazz for an intimate dinner it's too echoey.

Thanks everyone. Have passed Kelways so many times on the road between my parents' house and Street but didn't realise the restaurant was good. Will investigate that first I think.

What sort of food does The Seedhouse do?

I've only been on Sunday lunch time but had a delicious goats cheese starter, followed by the best roast beef, yorkshire and roast pots I'd had in a long time.

The restaurant is a lovely big farmhouse style restaurant with great big chunky pine tables and lots of features. Good prices too.I think they've got menus on their website.
