Hogmanay in Edinburgh with a 4 yr old - anyone done it?

My dh is really keen to go away for New Year, and has always wanted to do the street party thing in Edinburgh. What's it like? My impressions are that it's a lively, noisy, busy street party ... that a 4 year old would hate (despite the tiredness come the witching hour!) - but am I right? Has anyone ever taken a small child? Would you? Should you?

Have done the street party (as a single and no-strings non-parent) and can say that I wouldn't go with a child. Mayhem. I think it's got better with the advent of tickets but still... It's very crowed and everyone is wasted.

It is not for kids, it will be freezing, crowded and everyone is their to drink and party, it would be like taking a toddler to a massive nightclub.

Also did it before it became a ticketed event but is NOT somewhere you want to be with a young child IMO.

Think thousands of drunk people swaying, falling over, chucking cans in the air, waving fags about, being sick and pissing in alleyways.

Really, really wouldn't take a child to it. Is there anyone who could keep him for you so you and dh could go alone?

I think it's a definite no, for all the reasons already mentioned.
I've been a few times and wouldn't take a child of any age far less a 4 year old.

There are masses of people. It would be utterly horible for a small child. Cold, very probably wet, exceptionally crowded with loads of pissed people.

Thanks everyone - dh is now accepting my argument that we go to Scotland for Christmas, NOT for New Year. He's accepting it a bit grudgingly, but he thanks MNers for "their candid responses" (think that was a bit sarcastic!)

Edinburgh for Christmas would be much nicer for a small child.
There are lots of things to do that they would enjoy: torchlight processions; big wheel; Christmas market; ice rink plus the usual pantos etc
