I went a lot as a child, and as dd missed out on disney because of chickenpox I thought a trip to IOW would be nice as a second holiday in September time.

We used to stay in Shaklin is that still nice?

So any hotel/holiday cottage recommendations and other ideas of things to do when there

TIA

The George Hotel is nice, as is Priory Bay - although both are fairly pricey.

Completely wholesome and outdoorsy if you are into that sort of thing.

We stayed in ventnor and went with english country cottages

black gang chine is GREAT - loads of plastic models in bizarre themes and big park and stuff - when we went you could reuse the ticket to visit again later in teh week.

There is some bird park - birdland or something where the birds are all wandering round and you can feed them and it is great.

Umm - Robin hill as mentioned.

There is a pub called the crab and lobster that does the most amazing seafood.

The dinasour museum is great too.

We loved it when we were there and that is before you have even been to the beach!

Priory Bay widely reported to be the nicest on the island, but it's not cheap. The Wight Mouse at Chale is apparently on the up again after some years of being not so good.
Farringford does suites in the grounds for families and is in my fave part of the island, West Wight, Freshwater. You are inches from stunning walks on Tennyson Down.
Seaview Hotel is also very nice, but IMO that side of the island is a bit too busy and congested.
Both the main YHA hostels are good and family friendly - Sandown for the archetypal resort holiday and the quieter seaside of Totland Bay.
You are right though mosschops - there are still some bloody awful hotels on the island. Especially, I hate to say it, in Shanklin and Sandown/Ryde.
We loved the Botanical Gardens in Ventnor, the whole of the Undercliff area (St Lawrence especially), Carisbrooke Castle and wonderfully restored Osborne House.
