UK holiday with 18 month old in October - where to go/stay?!

Hi,

Wondered if anyone had any recommendations of where in the UK to go for a weeks' holiday with our 18 month old in October? No more than a few hours' drive from north London, with activities such as National Trust properties, nice walks, some child friendly activities eg wildlife park etc? I've spent a lot of time searching but there are so many regions I'm struggling to narrow it down, so would be great to have some personal recommendations!

Any specific accommodation recommendations would be appreciated too. We would love to stay in a child friendly hotel (eg the New Park Manor/Ickworth) but most look way out of our budget (about £500 for accommodation) so holiday cottage rental will probably be the best option.
