Can anyone help us plan an itinerary.

Just DH and I, would probably go late June.

We have up to two weeks, and a budget of about £1000 for travel and accommodation.

We live in Surrey. Would we be best off driving up (we would like to see Bamborough so could do it en route), or flying to inverness/ Edinburgh and hiring a car?

We would like to see some of the places filmed for Outlander, and I would like to go back to Beauly outside Inverness where I went on a school trip many moons ago.

Would also quit fancy some of the islands, maybe Skye?

Anyone have any experiences?

You will be sick of your car by the end! If you're coming up through Northumbria, you could stop at Edinburgh, then drive up through Perth/Aviemore to Inverness, down via Loch Ness and then you're near Oban - so could do a Mull and Iona trip, not long crossings compared to some.
I don't know about Outlander so that may not be useful!

I love a road trip and regularly drive from London to the Highlands - 500 miles in fact.

Glencoe, Glen Etive, Rannoch Moor, the road to Mallaig (or steam train from Fort William), love it all.

Skye is beautiful as is Glencoe.
Aviemore
Fort William

We've been up to John o groats a few times. Not much there but we can say we've been! Took a day boat trip to Orkney which was great

Perthshire, Pitlochry is a lovely town

Rannoch moor, killiecrankie and queens view is spectacular

Edinburgh and Stirling for the old cities and castles.

West coast (where I live) the isle of Arran is very popular for day trips.

To be honest the whole country is amazing! I've lived her for 3 years but have been travelling round it for the last 10 years !

It's a long drive up to Skye from where you are. On your budget I would head to Oban, cross to Mull and then take the Ferry back from Tobermory to Kilchoan. Explore Ardnarmurchan and then head for Fort William. Check out acclamation costs and ferry prices though. We usually camp and Scotland can be pricey.

The Mull ferry is now on the road equivalent tariff so much, much cheaper.

Thanks for that Northern, that's really useful to know.
