Holiday in UK. What must I remember to take with me?

Apart from obvious things like phone chargers, what other essentials must I take? Am bound to forget something although will probably be able to buy replacements, we're going to the Isle of Wight, not the back of beyond.

I'm thinking kids favourite toys and books, colouring things, stuff that you have lying around at home that would probably forget to pack for a holiday but can't do without. gin

Dds aged 6 and 8. SC holiday cottage. Am not planning to do much cooking.

Buckets and spades if you have them,toiletries and sun block,swimming cossies/trunks,towels for the beach,sunglasses,first aid kit,any prescription meds.

Frying pan, sharp knife (the ones in these places are often rubbish) bin bags, toilet roll.

Check that your accommodation includes towels, tea towels etc.

I always:
Buy at least 2 new DVDs and stick them on on our way to Cornwall works a treat
Print off colour sheets, DS is mad on Star Wars so print off lots of those and new packs of felt pens
Take plenty of Calpol - DS once had leg ache most nights after lots of walking
Tea towels
Anti-bacterial wipes and hand gel
Sandwich bags for picnic for the beach
Ice packs
Cool Bag
Mini pack of cheddars and biscuits
Take also individually packed croissants, brioche etc...
Books for bedtime reading
Plasters
and we take Monopoly - its a traditional now we do it over the whole week

I also make sure I have addresses for local supermarket, hospital, pharmacy etc. A lot of places provide the details but handy to have just incase.

Waterproof sheet (DC haven't wet bed in years but always have one just in case)

Print outs of discount vouchers/accom confirmation & address

I buy DC favourite snacks and cereals.
I've researched places we'd like to go, googled for any discount vouchers and then write in notepad the post code so we can get directions on sat nav

I'm currently making my list for holiday in SC in Scotland (2 adults, 2 dogs, no DCs). On it are:

Ground anchor & chain for dog, so they can happily sit outside and not wander off
Disposable BBQs (& Marshmallows of course!)
Fire lighters & matches for beach fires
Flask & lunchboxes for packed lunches
Picnic blanket & fold up chairs
Binoculars
Dog towels
Head torches for night time dog strolls
Cloths, sponge scourer, tea towels (there's never enough)
1st Aid kit.
Midge repellant (Avon Skin So Soft - won't go to Scotland without it!)

Thanks to this thread, I've now added Sharp knife, bottle opener and board games!

I'm also going to take a load of food for nice lunches, including the sort of stuff we're unlikely to be able to pick up at the local shop such as halloumi, hummus, blue cheese etc, and stick it all in a cool box for the journey.

I print off local walks, and annotate my OS map with notes of good walks, places to visit etc.

I also make a meal plan, so I know exactly what to take, and factor in a couple of nights eating out (we're staying in quite a remote place, so can't nip out for fish and chips more's the pity!)

A couple of decent half-pint mugs. Nothing winds me up more than finding the cottage is equipped only with teeny dollys tea party cups. Agree with sharp knife. Crocs/cheap flip flops for beach. Charger for camera.

Oh I'm intending to eat out quite a lot. In fact I did tell the dh and dds just yesterday that as it is in fact my holiday too I will not be spending the week cooking and clearing up. Or making bloody sandwiches every night, dh I'm looking at you.

I've got a great app on my phone with lists and lists of places to see, restaurants, hospitals, opening times, etc and it comes with directions and phone numbers too. Might program a few in Google Maps too so we can find our way around.

I've got quite a list coming on now.

Bear in mind that 3G signal is a bit hit and miss in the countryside. Any plans involving use of the interwebs should probably be backed up by printouts.

There's plenty of big regular supermarkets- and very nice 'farm' shops (esp. the one at Arreton)- as well as local/express type ones on the island! Don't bother bringing food with you that you can easily pick up when you've arrived.

Is there a supermarket that delivers to your holiday address? I usually book a delivery for the afternoon/evening we arrive. You could get a delivery of basics (milk, juice, breakfast things, wine etc) even if you intend to eat out a lot. Saves looking for a supermarket or finding that the only shop near is closed when you arrive. I find it a great help.
