Anyone in Glasgow who can help me please?

Thinking about trekking up Ben Nevis later this year. I'll be flying into Glasgow airport but despite some Googling I'm a bit confused how I then get to Fort William!!

Is there a train direct from the airport or do I have to get into Central Glasgow and catch another train out?

Any advice/help appreciated. Thanks.

There is a bus link to Paisley Gilmour Street station, and then I think you have to go to Glasgow Queen street to get the train up to Fort William - it is less than 10 minutes walk, and there is a free shuttle bus between the two.

Sorry - I should have said you get the train from Paisley to Glasgow Central.

If you wanted to leap in a cab, it is not a long trip - maybe a tenner - I will check that with dh when he is off the phone.

You need to get a bus from the airport to Paisley Gilmour Street Station. From there you go into Glasgow. There is no train to the airport.

I think black cab to central station from airport is around £25 then pick up the train from there. Be sure you get a window seat.

You can get the airport bus to Central Station then the shuttle between both and the train to Fort William from Queen St.

Dh says get the 500 Airbus to the centre of Glasgow, which drops either out of the front of Queen Street, or at a side entrance.

Dh says check your trains as there aren't many to Fort William each day - we can find out more, if you want.

One bus a day direct from the airport to FW. See citylink. Takes about 3 hours. The train takes longer but is VERY scenic. Other coaches you go into Glasgow Buchanan St Bus Station then out again.

Or sleeper from London to FW.

STDG- I'm looking at travelling to Fort William on a Friday in September and then back on Sunday. If you could advise on times that would be great thank you? I'm a bit confused that there seems to be a normal train and a more scenic, special one in the summer months - or have I got that wrong?

If you can't sort out transport to Ben Nevis, than I'd advise not climbing up a big hill.

The September services are not on the web yet but to give you an idea weekdays 0903, 1221, 1821 x Queen Street journey times about 3h 40mins. Sunday return currently 1140 and 1737 x Fort William similar journey times. You need to check train times nearer the time - they are on web 12 weeks ahead but www.scotrail.co.uk will have timetables at change date 17th May.

Not sure what you've seen re summer but there is a summer steam service - I think FW-Mallaig and vv - different and pricier tickets. Not sure if it runs as late as September.

You're welcome. Fort William is lovely - we spent a fortnight on holiday up there some years ago - and the rail trip up from Glasgow takes in some lovely scenery, especially the bits that are away from the road - like Rannoch Moor.

Just check for Sunday services as they will be significantly reduced from the weekday timetable.

If you can stay a bit longer and get the steam train from Fort William to Mallaig for the day, it goes over the viaduct featured in the Harry Potter films and is a magical journey, voted one of the best train journeys in the world I believe.

The steam train does run to Mallaig in September. Unless you are a steam nut, save the fare and go on the normal train - same views, much cheaper.

Train times rarely vary at all, in my experience (and I live on that train line).
