I can't think of any around Kendal itself but if you were willing to go a little further, theres South Lakes Wildlife Park nr Barrow, Beatrix Potter World at Windermere, Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway nr Windermere, Aquarium nr Windermere, boats (again on Windermere). Kendal's a nice market town, as is Penrith just up the M6. I think you'd be better off looking at things in the direction of Windermere, Carnforth and Barrow. There are plenty of farm parks etc down that end of the county. Sorry I can't be more help but i'm from Penrith and now living over the West Coast.

In Lancaster (half an hour in the car) there's a butterfly house in a gorgeous victorian park along the big green-domed ashton memorial you can see from the M6 (that's williamson park). There's also the castle with the dungeon tours.

There's a cave with a lake in it above Rydal Water that's an old slate mine and you can teach the kids to skim stones (there used to be a lonely goldfish in it too!) - for this you park at the national trust car park (I think it's called white moss common) and the walk takes about 30-40mins to get to the cave.

At Keswick there the pencil museum (cringe) but more interestingly for DS's an old movie car museum.

There's a lovely old-fashioned cinema in ambleside called zefferellis and you can get he most gorgeous fish ad chips at the old chip shop down the alleyway opposite!

If it's hot you can also safely go swimming at Fell Foot on Windermere - a national trust place again I think.

What sort of "places" are you wanting?
I believe there are some rather pleasant hills, lakes, mountains, rivers, waterfalls, woodland, that sort of thing that most kids enjoy
Sorry, couldn't resist!
What age are your kids and I'll get my brain in gear for you.

If you want to venture a little further Ostrich World, just east of Penrith, is fantastic, especially for younger children.
