Good bits for strong pony with fat tongue!

Don't suppose anyone has any experience with this? He is lovely but can get over excited and dd wants a stronger bit on him. He goes nicely in a thin cambridge snaffle (thin, with a port, no joints) but there aren't any brakes. We tried him in a waterford which was too thick for him. He did go well in a universal with a lozenge but he's started snatching and coughing with it.

Lurking because we have a similar problem,but ours likes to get his tongue over the bit.Our instructor has suggested a pelham,but my head is spinning just looking at all the different sorts.

I think a grackle will help with the tongue issue, I've just bought one on ebay. Think I am just going to stick him in the gag waterford for xc on sunday even though he doesn't like it, at least she has brakes!

The bombers happy tongue bits sound perfect but they are £££££££££££

I might try a thinner waterford, NS do a 14mm one but again ££££££

Dhorse has a pelham. He goes well in it and seems happy but he can still get his tongue over if he wants to! (usually if he's a bit bored).
It hasn't got a port though which could possibly help stop his little games.

Im watching with interest.... Dhorse doesn't have brakes atm. Stopping purely using my seat isn't particulary instant. Spring fever is not helping the situation!

How about rugby pelham? Much like a snaffle, buto curb rein there if you need it.

Wilkie not strong enough. He sets his neck. Pelham not ideal as he tucks in anyway

My old pony was very strong and used to set his neck. After some trial and error we ended up with a Dr Bristol for him which seemed to do the trick.

Difficult. Maybe back to long and low, getting a relaxed neck again? Avoid the lively stuff for a bit and go from there? Is your dd very experienced and ok with it, or younger and losing confidence?

At the end of the day a naughty horse will be naughty whatever bit you use, and you can't go up endlessly, does she have a good instructor who could help?

I agree about not going up endlessly and in fact when we bought him he was in a gag for everything. Dd is a good rider but worries xc although she has hunted him which was interesting he's delightful on hacks and in the arena and in fact almost certainly will be fine xc it's more dds confidence I am worried about.

I would try a pee wee. we've had lots of success with warmbloods that have big fat tongues in this bit. Its got a few different options for strength but I think its a middle ground between a snaffle and a pelham
