ok so had farrier last week, unfortunately pony's foot got pricked, he realised and took nail out and left it out, has been a little sore, as expected, but is actually worse today, noticeably lame, although no heat at all.

he is coming back in the morning to take off shoe and investigate further.

Sad poor little boy

When you think how many nails a farrier puts in a day, it's inevitable that sometimes it goes wrong. Pony may be developing an abscess which will probably be fine once the shoe is off and poulticed - is he normally quite hardy with his feet? In which case it should heal pretty quickly once the pressure is off and any pus is out.

yep frosty. That's the case.

He is normally fab, and he could have just not told me.... Anyway, he was here at 8am today, shoe off, dug around and found the sore point, poultice on.

He is a terrible wuss, and when he had an abcess before he wouldn't even put his foot down, and it really wasn't that bad.

He is a lot better already Smile

That's good, hopefully a couple more days will see him right!

No better really Sad even though the poultice has been on since Tuesday. Only a tiny amount of crap has come out.

Do I call him again. or vet? Or just keep poulticing til monday?

He is feeling a bit miserable bless him Sad but not sure the vet would do anyhting else anyway, would they?

I don't know, just wanted to share your pain as am poulticing too.

I suppose the vet might dig out a bit more, irrigate, give antibiotics?

Spoke to farrier this morning, and he is coming out tomorrow. Also spoke to vet, who said that they wouldn't usually give anti biotics for an abcess as it tends to stop the crap coming out, and just leads to a relapse at a later date.

Have a couple of sachets of bute by me, so at vet's suggestion have given him some today just to make him more comfy, but it should have worn off some by the time the farrier comes tomorrow.

don't know really - there is a bruise, it could be an abscess or just a bruise or ?

Good luck with farrier tomorrow, I think they can be much better (and cheaper) at dealing with these things than vets?
