We seem to have had non stop rain for a month now. Alice is out during the day and I am lucky that she has a big field which is not getting too churned up though typical muddly patches by the gate and the dry stone wall where she likes to shelter from the wind (which also seems to have gone on forever)

I am also fortunate enough to have a second field (much wetter) which I can use in the Spring if the dryer weather ever comes.

How long does it take a muddy filed to recover and should I be doing anything else to look after the grass. I really want her out during the day as I think she will be bored senseless if I try and keep her in . Just curious how other people manage.

Roll on Spring!

When you are resting the current field, rake over the bald parts to break the surface and scatter some grass seed maybe?

It seems to heal remarkably quickly - when it's wet I try and tread in the worst of the divots, when I'm walking across the field for any reason. Another thing to try is electric fence off the gate area - you'll still get a muddy bit next to the tape, but at least it isn't right in the gateway. If the patches do not look as though they are going to regrow grass then rake them over before the ground dries up too much and re-seed.

My fields look dire atm, but hopefully by May you'll never know, although last summer I had sheep on them and because it was so dry the grass didn't really do the autumn regrowth so they were a bit balder then I would have liked. I also spent a lot of time dealing with the damn thistles so it had better look tidier!
