Insurance hike!

My horse is insured with NFU Mutual, has been for years with one claim about 8 years ago. He's 20 years old now.

Last year his insurance was £350. Now it's £660. WTF. Surely that's not just his age?

Gawd! Have you asked them why?

Had exactly this same issue with NFU Mutual this year with 17 year old pony (no claims) Apparently the premiums start to load over the age of 16, and I wonder if they go up again at 20, as Ben's was about £350 for this year compared with about £200 last year. I've moved him to veteran cover, as we have 3 horses and it was getting ridiculous!

Out of interest. NFU said the hike was because of 3 things:

  1. We had double bonus last year (true) - £70 extra.
  2. The economic climate
  3. My horse is now 20.

The third one was the most influential. They gave me the same cover as last year minus vet cover for illness for £170 (known as a veteran plan).

So I'm stuffed if he gets colic.
