If you're able to start from a low salary or even consider a second degree the NHS is a good employer. I'm about to start a course funded by my dept that will take me up a band and eventually to qualify as a clinician. I love helping people one to one - I can see 25 people a day and send the majority of them home happy that I've fixed their device (technical role).

Pore over the NHS jobs site, you may find something you like the sound of.

I'd been looking into the degree route and although the loans seem massive I'd never have paid much of it back and the increased job satisfaction would have been so well worth the temporary (if quite long-term) drop in pay.

You're not stuck. Teaching is no longer a job you can sustain until you're 68. If you retrain you'll be able to keep going for longer.
