Could I ask you lovely teachers about Year 6 and SATS preparation?

DD is so bored in Year 6. She's still learning new things in history and geography, but she's totally peed off with the amount of revision of easy topics - 2 hours of commas this week in English, no extension activities - they're doing in core subjects.

She says many lessons have just consisted of revising/copying things down from the board for weeks now. School is pushing extra maths and English lessons and has been for months now - all to do better in SATs. Argh! (She's level 6 in maths, English and science and up to now school has been good. But this year they've just lost the plot.)

She is bored and frustrated. And I'm cross that Year 6 is being wasted! From a teacher's point of view, how hard are you pressured to gets kids to do well in SATs?

What should I do? Wait until after SATs? Contact the school and express my frustration? Anything else? Thank you.

Honestly? Bite your tongue and ride it out. The teachers will be under a huge amount of pressure. It's only a few days till the Easter holidays and SATS are fairly soon after. Yes - it's crap. The teachers know that. The school knows that. But that's the system we have.

Appreciate that those teachers helped your DD achieve her Level 6. They know what they are doing. I am sure they will have after SATs work on the back burner already waiting to cheer the kids up.

OK, thank you. I was wondering how tough it was for teachers. Aren't SATs changing along with the NC and levels this year?

What would happen if schools decided not to play along and just did their normal maths and English teaching? How much do levels change by doing all this extra coaching??

They've probably got kids who will struggle to hit Level 4 - which is where they should all be.

Level 6 is excellent; your child will not be a priority at this stage.
