How often do you speak to your head?

Just wondering how usual it is to have a head who knows anything about you... Do they usually, for example, ask you how things are going? Have an open door policy? Or is closed door an minimal contact the norm?

Daily- it's one of her good points! Her door is always open. I remember being amazed when I first started that she actually socialised in the staff room at break times and lunch times. I'd say as a staff we all know each other well. We all went for a spa day for her 50th last year which I guess is quite unusual!

Most days- I love her, she's ace. Makes a big difference to the job if you like the Head.

Most days. Which sounds good until I say that we are a very small school (4 teachers plus a Head), my classroom is the closest one to her office (doors almost opposite each other) and I'm the Deputy Head! I just want her to say Good Morning when she comes in each day rather than ignoring me

Daily. Often a few times each day. She often pops into the staff room at break and/or lunch for a chat with her coffee. She has an open door policy but is also out and about in school or in the main office. She comes to our whole staff meeting every week.

Our head is very approachable and really friendly. She was deputy until last year and is very different to our old head. This one also comes over to the pub for the odd staff drinks evening and goes to staff events such as christmas party or end of year drinks.

We are quite a small school though - 9 classes, infants only. So it's all very friendly and chatty.

OK, I'm in a secondary (but quite a small one). I started in January and although he says hello etc, he's never asked how things are going etc. This is very different from my previous heads, who would try to make sure they knew if staff were settling in OK etc. Maybe I'm expecting too much?

Secondary - previous head would walk past you in the corridor and completely blank you. Did same to pupils too.

New (interim, sadly) head much more engaging. It makes a hell of a difference.
