A question for DHTs...

I've been asked to meet with some NQTs to discuss career progression and I was wondering if you'd mind telling me what subject you were coordinating when you were made DHT. I was coordinator of a core subject as were/are most of the other DHTs I know. Does this tend to be the norm?

English, Assessment and SENCo. Large four form entry primary school. I had been an assistant head elsewhere prior to my appointment. I do think leading a core subject is important if you aspire to SLT, all the ones I know lead English or Maths (or both!).

My route was NQT, second school as CT, third school as KS leader and then became AHT, DH (two schools), HT, PT CT (retirement beckons)!

But in my day we were probationary teachers not NQTs!

My route was Infant school: NQT- 4-8 specialism, ICT coordinator 1 year, maths coordinator 2 years
Primary School: English coordinator 6 years (plus teaching all age-groups), DHT+SENCO 7 years, last 3 part-time.

I agree, a core subject is probably better for progression to SLT.

Maths teacher, key stage leader of maths, head of maths then job equivalent in position to a deputy head, just not called that!

SENCO, More able, Traveller children, Looked After Children, Foundation Stage co-ordinator.
