Assistant headteacher role?

I have been head of department for three years now (core subject) but in two different schools.

I have wanted to return to my hometown, which is about fifty minutes from where I live now and about an hour and ten minutes away from where I work, for a while, and I have seen an assistant head role I could apply for, however I am wondering if it is a little soon to be applying.

Any advice?

IME, Asst Head jobs are rare, so go for it. Even if you don't get it, it was be really useful experience, and you'll know what to expect next time.

Go for it.

Even if you don't get it, the experience itself will be useful.

But be prepared. I'm an Assistant Head (primary) and essentially it is a job where you have to be a jack-of-all-trades.

I became an Assistant Head after 3 years as a Core HoD. Prime time to move I think.
