Who does the setting in your school?

If you have a transfer within year at your school who organises the sets/class for that child? Is it hods or pastoral staff? Does that change if the pupil is on a planned managed move from another school?

It's largely a case of putting them where there is a space! Where possible previous attainment is taken in to account but in some subjects where class size is severely limited (eg technology for H&S reasons) the top sets are full with no room for movement until resetting which may only happen once a year.

We do it a mix of both.

But in a core subject you would have to take previous attainment into account wouldn't you? You can't put a pupil working at level 7 maths into a class where everyone else is working at level 4 just because that's where there's space. Or put a pupil who is struggling with basic spelling and punctuation into a top set english class just because there's no space in a lower set.

If you do a mix of both, is that some subjects get the hod to decide? Or is it that some pupils are placed by hods and some are placed by pastoral?

Pastoral Head - pretty much where there is space, although try to broadly match ability i.e. if in set 1 at old school will be in set 1 or 2 if there is space.

Subjects have no say until the next round of assessment.

Pastoral heads do it at ours, but still is determined by where space is available, and this tends to be in the lower sets. Probably kid and teacher would have to suck up doing loads of differentiation until the year end.

Left up to subject departments here. Year head would tell us their results from previous school, we stick them roughly in the right place, then move them if their test results show they need to be up or down.
