Teaching food technology/ DT info please

I am considering doing a PGCE in secondary education. My degree is a language but not one of the core ones (but bviously I could go down this route.)

What I am interested to know however, is what the situation is for teaching food technology in schools and whether I need to have a second subject ie textiles. I would really love to be involved in teaching food at secondary level but I'm not sure how and where I get information from.

Any info on this would be much appreciated.

When I did my PGCE I range the course leader at the university, explained the degree I had and the subject I wanted to teach and he gave me lots of advice and pointers, I followed them all and a year later I was on the PGCE. Have you looked at a support role in a DT department in a Secondary School. Getting hands on experience is important. Also a lot of schools are offering a GTP style program now so you might be able to do the training from within the school.

I did a GTP a few years ago (trained in a school) and they only took me on (I'm food tech) on the basis I also did a second subject (graphics). They told me it was for my own good as it made me more employable being able to offer more than one subject. I had no qualifications or knowledge as to what graphics was! I taught myself/observed lessons and taught it to KS3 in my training year. Have never used it since though.
