The met police have issued new guidance on how to deal with cases of suspected FGM and children who may be at risk.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a traditional cultural practice involving the cutting or removal of the external female genitals. It varies in severity from nicking the clitoris to the removal of all the external tissue and sewing the whole area up and leaving a tiny hole for menses and urine.

It's estimated that 23,000 girls under the age of 15 in the UK are at risk every year and around 66,000 women are living with the consequences.

FGM can be fatal, and can result in lifelong physical and mental trauma on those who survive it.

Please circulate this around your school and share with any other teachers you know. It may save someone's life.
