So, I've landed my first job (yr 4) and I'll be replacing a long established and much loved teacher (who has a new SMT post at a different school). Has anyone any tips on how to avoid/manage "But Mrs Xxxx didn't do it like that" etc and make them my class as quickly as possible?

I'll have a few days in the class before the end of this term to see how things currently work and learn the school's routines, rewards system, etc.

Thanks!

I think just face the fact that there will be loads of 'when is Mrs X coming back, she was nicer' type stuff and DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY!!

Maybe plan to do some good 'hook' activities in the first couple of weeks. Personally I would avoid the 'self portrait and write about yourself' tactic and just go straight for learning.

Be very firm, fair and fun.

Good luck, it's great that you are so excited. I also took my first class on in the January (many moons ago) and it was hard, but they felt like mine by Easter and I have very fond memories of them.

Don't be afraid to ask the other Teachers for any help/ info you need.

Oh, remembers current job and while you are in this term take a careful look at any strategies that are in place and working for anyone with SEN or behaviour issues and plan to keep using them- consistency will help for them.

Thank you! I'm hoping to find out this Friday what the key topics/themes are for next term.

There is one in the class with 1-2-1 support so I plan to set time aside to talk lots with his TA and will offer to meet the parents.

"Firm, fair and fun" - I like that :-)
