To wonder why Camilla is Duchess of Cornall, and Kate to be made Countess of Strathearn... When neither are Cornish or Scottish?

Ummm, I'm fairly apathectic about the Royal family in general but I do find this strange... AIBU?

Charles is Prince of Wales yet isn't Welsh. I think it's more to do with representing/ruling (take your pick) all of the constituent parts of the United Kingdom.

Well the Duke of Edinburgh isn't from Edinburgh is he?

Euphemia Thu 07-Jun-12 17:25:53

Charles isn't Welsh and Phillip isn't from Edinburgh, so YABU.

Carlia Thu 07-Jun-12 17:26:00

But surely it would be better having someone Welsh/Cornish/Scottish?

Oppsididitagain Thu 07-Jun-12 17:26:05

It's all to do with traditional bequests of land but these days is just a title

Groovee Thu 07-Jun-12 17:27:52

What happens if none of the soon to be spouses are Welsh/Cornish/Scottish

I believe William and Catherine got Strathearn to acknowledge their time at St Andrews

Carlia Thu 07-Jun-12 17:28:37

I am genuinely surprised so many people agree with it

RobotLover68 Thu 07-Jun-12 17:32:52

you've forgotten the Earl and Countess of Wessex - where IS Wessex these days?

Bathsheba Thu 07-Jun-12 17:36:51

St Andrews is kind of nowhere near Strathearn - although when I grew up in Strathearn every school trip we ever went on was to St Andrews...

I'm genuinely surprised so many people are so ignorant of the history and habits of this nation. hmm

OP - we are ruled by a monarchy who pass their right to rule down by blood. With that goes a shed load of titles and some nice real estate. Has been like that for over a thousand years now.

Btw - it's not just the Royals. The Duke of Devonshire's 'seat' is where?

QueenSconetta Thu 07-Jun-12 17:39:44

Camilla is also the Duchess of Rothesay.

Carlia Thu 07-Jun-12 17:43:23

Northernlurker - Do you mean me?

Well it´s not the wives fault that they have/are entitled to their husbands titles, is it?

I agree there have been a lot of posters recently without a clue about how the monarchy works, fair enough if you're foreign but if you're British I would have thought you would have known at least some of the basics eg; succession and inheritance of titles.

It's very strange, although maybe I'm the strange one for thinking most people would know these things already.

Carlia Thu 07-Jun-12 17:48:29

There is a difference between disagreeing with something and being ignorant of it

OldGreyWiffleTest Thu 07-Jun-12 17:49:31

Camilla could be Duchess of Cornwall because she's married to the Duke of Cornwall???? Doh!

LentillyFart Thu 07-Jun-12 17:51:52

I am genuinely surprised so many people agree with it

Really?

Gosh.

TheNewandImprovedMrsHollywood Thu 07-Jun-12 17:52:02

OP - but you didn't say you disagreed, you said you wondered why it was in your thread title. If you were saying you disagreed with it, perhaps you should have said that.

Yes I meant you. You weren't saying you disagreed with the titles, you were saying 'arf isn't it strange that's their title when they don't come from there'.

LentillyFart Thu 07-Jun-12 17:52:23

I don't think you're strange magneto

chocolateandcoffee Thu 07-Jun-12 17:56:27

Does Queen just have a list of available titles to choose from? Are the inherited, too?
