help name my kitten

(60 Posts)

im the proud owner of a girl kitten thats black with white feet and a white nose smile

I want an unsual name please any ideas?

dunmopin Sun 02-Feb-14 21:29:34

She sounds gorgeous. The first thing I thought of with similar colouring was a broad bean flower, but beanflower is a bit unwieldy as a name. Pansy?

I love the idea of my oh shouting "broad bean flower"grin pansy is a good start..I like that..
this is my first ever pet.. ever.. she's coming on Friday any tips to make her welcome? and any essential buys?
thanks in advance x

Well you'll need a litter tray, litter (ultra clumping is small grained & softer on little paws), litter scoop, ping pong balls, side plates to use for her food, cereal free kitten food, cheap fleece blankets, a water dish (change daily), a tall scratch post so it's still useable when she's adult & a bed but a dog bed because cat beds can be a bit thin on the base and its not comfy for them but dog beds are much better & a cat flap.

Then you need a vet appt for a health check, vaccination and then neutering & microchipping.

*I want a cat called Georgie so it's my go-to name for kittens.

dunmopin Sun 02-Feb-14 21:57:40

Baking parchment

It makes a lovely rustling noise when it's crunched into balls and thrown across the floor.

(that's a buy, not a suggested name)

brill thanks fluffy.. I already have a cat flap but thats it im going shopping tomorrow so will take your list smile
should I get a litter tray with a lid on?
im excited but a little nervous I hope she likes us hmm

haha I don't know I think baking parchment has a lovely ring to it wink

Socks, my grandma had a tabby cat with four white feet called Socks for many years when I was is a fab name.

dunmopin Sun 02-Feb-14 22:05:30

You will be her favourite thing in the whole world. If she's wary at first, don't overhandle her or let people keep picking her up - let her come to you - soon she will be blissfully curled up in your lap (or trying to sit on your shoulder or on top of your head, depending on temperament!)

Fluffycloudland77 Sun 02-Feb-14 22:06:30

Probably, shop around though because prices vary wildly.

If you don't its Sod's law you get a cat who likes to kick litter everywhere.

cozietoesie Mon 03-Feb-14 13:26:47

I need a picture pre-suggestions. Is your camera charging for Friday?

(It's the rule, here, I'm afraid. Start a thread about a kitten and you have to provide a photo! grin )

Blithereens Mon 03-Feb-14 13:39:51

dunmopin I think Bean is a great name for a cat! I call my two my little beans all the time grin Other names I like are Fizz, Poppy, Minty, Vero, Domino, Ruby, Piccolo, Oreo, Mitten, and Molly.

The BEST catnip cat toys are by Yeoww, you can get them on Amazon. My two absolutely love the rainbow and the banana.

Lovethesea Mon 03-Feb-14 19:37:43

Which author do you like? We have a cat named Tolkien which is great fun to yell across fields.

lovethesea you are so much classier than me... I like jackie collins wink

Fluffycloudland77 Mon 03-Feb-14 21:23:10

£110! Easily done though. You go in for a squeaky catnip mouse & come out with a cat tree & another bag of caviar flavoured treats plus some posh cat food.

Ha fluffy it's scary!

I am so excited shock

cozietoesie Mon 03-Feb-14 21:43:30

You'll manage. smile We all had a Firstcat at one point.

MissHobart Mon 03-Feb-14 22:47:03

You'll find a name that fits when you get him/her home!

We have:

Ozzy & Elvis - watching "The Osbornes" when we got then and thought Elvis would be a good partner! We're not fans of either namesake!

Bogey - He adopted us and when OH picked him up we saw he has a black "bogey" coming out of his nose which is white!

Darwin - he has lots of extra toes, auto we reckon he's more evolved! hmm

Longdistance Mon 03-Feb-14 22:54:02

I come on to say Arthur, but it's a girl.

Blithereens Mon 03-Feb-14 23:25:27

I've got one called Arthur, Long smile you have good taste!!

cozietoesie Mon 03-Feb-14 23:39:26

Guinevere then. (Gwinnie for short.)

Weegiemum Mon 03-Feb-14 23:45:14

We've got an all black (apart from a tiny dickie bow) boy of 16 weeks called Severus (as in Snape!). Dd2 owns him, and wants a girl cat called Minerva (as in Prof. McGonnagal - not happening!!).

Best toys have been a feather duster stick and a wee ball with a bell inside!

Have fun, we're loving having our crazy cat!

17leftfeet Mon 03-Feb-14 23:55:57

Don't forget to kitten proof your home

I've got an open gas fire, now stuffed with paper
Sides of the washing machine
Back of the toilet
Side of dd's drawers

Anywhere they can get needs blocking off -I find flip chart paper best for this grin

gobbin Tue 04-Feb-14 01:00:35

I think Bean is a great name for a cat!

I have a cat called, really! He looks like a baked bean.

How about Pickle? I also like old fashioned human names e.g. Pattie, Dorcas, Fleur etc.

livingatheendofthewall Tue 04-Feb-14 01:34:48

Great short list! We have 2 sisters called Big Bean and Little Bean, Beanie and Beano for short, we also have one of Little Bean's kittens, Pinto who gets called Mini my little cat family!

sashh Tue 04-Feb-14 08:38:14

Chiaroscuro. Her majesty Chiaroscuro queen of the Monochrome and chess boards. Keira for day to day.

Chiaroscuro is an art term for when you contrast light and dark, usually for dramatic effect.

lookdeepintotheparka Tue 04-Feb-14 10:08:37

Phenomenal name there sashh grin

How about:

Prudence (we wanted this for our kitten but kids wouldn't have it!)
Constance (Connie)
Oreo (if she's black and white)

Enjoy your kitten - am envy grin

Lovethesea Tue 04-Feb-14 10:17:18

Call her Jackie Collins then!

so many great names and only one cat grin

will upload pictures on Friday I haven't told the kids yet the poor kitten won't know what's hit her confused

cozietoesie Tue 04-Feb-14 11:37:10

How many and how old are they? You'll have to keep them under control (and Good Luck with that!) so that they don't overwhelm the wee soul.

Is there a safe place that she can go to for Me Time if it all gets too much for her?

3 dc 11, 8 and 4 im picking the kitten up after bed time so it can have a night of peace before the kids see it..wink

hello my love kitten betty has arrived smile but she already has me worried I showed her where her litter tray was and she now asleep in she hasnt moved for an hour should I be worriedhmm

cozietoesie Fri 07-Feb-14 20:03:32

If it's the same litter she was used to, she may be miserable and lost and happy to find a familiar smell. If this is her first time away from Mom and her litter mates, it will be the biggest trauma in her life so far, remember.

I'd get a cardboard box ready for her with a fleece inside for coziness - or a warm lap - gently take her out of the litter tray and relocate her. She should have got over it by tomorrow.

Have you got food and water around for her?

Hi Cozie thanks for replying I cannot tell you how glad I am to get her away from the house she was in sad the litter tray was filthy and just had scraps of newspaper in... God knows what was in her food bowl it was massive chunks of biscuits no water grr it makes me so bloody angry!!

So no it's not the same cat litter but it's a litter tray with a lid on.. So maybe she feels safe there.?

She's not had anything to eat or drink she lets me pick her up with no issue not heard a purr from her yet..

It's like having a new baby envy

TamzinGrey Fri 07-Feb-14 21:38:54

Our dainty little rescue girl has kept her original name - Harriet.

cozietoesie Fri 07-Feb-14 21:46:58

You may have it there with the feeling safer thought. Maybe see if you can make her up a bed or a comfy thing to sit on in a darkish place - behind a chair or sofa, say, and just leave her there to adjust. She'll come out eventually.

Thanks Cozie, I really appreciate your advice shock

She's still not been for a wee or poo and hasn't had anything to eat or drink.. Do I need to worry now?

cozietoesie Sat 08-Feb-14 08:31:53

I think I'd be just a little concerned but not completely overcome by worry. This is huge for her and it sounds as if she's been in a pretty disorganized house so the contrast will be as big as it can be, really.

Firstly - are you completely sure she hasn't had anything to eat or drink yet? She could have had a few laps/morsels and it would be difficult to see.

Secondly, until she's on her feet, I'd keep the DCs out of the room (Sorry - that won't be easy, I know) and sit in there myself with a book or watching telly on low volume. Just providing an atmosphere of calmness.

Was she used to noise in her previous house ? Sometimes, having a constant noise soure like a radio or telly on low volume all the time can be a comfort to them.

cozietoesie Sat 08-Feb-14 08:38:28

I forgot to ask - how old is she?

Nomorepeppapig Sat 08-Feb-14 08:39:30

Hi Cozie i think she's 9 weeks.. She's come round a bit I had got her some kitten biscuits from the vet she wasn't impresses wink

I just boiled some chicken and she's had a tiny bit of that I've only got the youngest here today and he's trying so hard to stay quiet and leave her alone smile

She's still not done a wee or a poo..we'll not one I've found anyway ..
But she is out of the litter tray and wondering about xx

Fluffycloudland77 Sat 08-Feb-14 10:02:34

Some kitten biscuits need softening with water. I didn't realise until I read the pack & realised why he wasn't eating them.

He wasn't my first kitten either blush

cozietoesie Sat 08-Feb-14 10:15:46

That's good. Once she starts wandering, she'll be OK.

I have to admit that I'm wondering whether you'll find a little 'present' somewhere if she was too worried to leave her fastness and approach the litter tray. Maybe put a few shreds of newspaper on top of the litter to help her realize that that's where she's to go if that's what she's been used to ? (You can remove it in due course.)

What kind of litter are you using, again? (They can be real fussy.)

cozietoesie Sat 08-Feb-14 10:16:52

PS - I had some 'especially good food' from the vet's last time Seniorboy had a bit of a constipation. He despised it.

were just keeping her in the kitchen at the moment..(except last night where I may have sneaked downstairs and fell asleep with her on the sofa)
ive just blitzed the kitchen and can't find anything...she does keep going in the litter tray and scratching about but she hasn't done anything.
the litter is pettex clean paws and ive got a huge bag so she will need to get used to itwink
thanks again I really appreciate your advice x

cozietoesie Sat 08-Feb-14 11:09:16

They sometimes like to do their evacuation in a set order - eg poo before pee. (Who can read a cat's mind.) Sounds to me as if she knows where she has to go but wants to do a poo and is maybe a tiny bit physically or mentally constipated.

Pooing is the more difficult for a cat so if she's still scratching around this afternoon, maybe see if you can stimulate the action a little. (I'll get you a reference in a minute.) 9 weeks is old enough to be on their own if they've been taught by a competent Mom but the house she came from doesn't sound like it was the best of environments so maybe she was used to going in a pile of other poo and can't cope with the embarassment of soiling a clean tray! (If so, that will change.)

cozietoesie Sat 08-Feb-14 11:11:49

This may be a bit TMI but there are loads of other references on the net. Just google a bit. (Hopefully, she sort it out herself soon.)

whoop we have poo grin and in her litter tray.. im so proud smile

cozietoesie Sat 08-Feb-14 11:22:59

Yay! First use of litter tray is always a tense time. She'll be fine now that she's pood - it would have been on her mind and it's a big thing about settling in. (I poo therefore I belong...)

Clean up fast because she'll be peeing there shortly.

Well done her.

cozietoesie Sat 08-Feb-14 11:28:04

PS - now that she's done some clearing out, she'll maybe eat a little more.

I hope so shes barely eaten a mouthful hmm
I gave her a tiny bit of kitten milk and she drank that but hasn't touched her water..
by the way.. i love my cat grin

cozietoesie Sat 08-Feb-14 12:02:08

I think we need a picture of her, eh?

She sounds as if she's getting there. As I said, it's just a huge change for her and she could take a day or two to get into her stride.

You're doing well. smile

ScentedScandal Sat 08-Feb-14 12:05:14

We've named her Betty it suits her.. smile

ScentedScandal Sat 08-Feb-14 12:10:44
