Cat owners quick I need help!!!!

FIL went to his bosses house today with some documents. His boss is on holiday for 3 weeks and asked FIL to take the key from his next door neighbour (a mutual friend) and to leave the documents in the kitchen.

When FIL got their he found a cat. It was yowling and he said it looked very distressed. There was no water in the cats bowl and no food out. FIL called his boss to tell him about the cat because he assumed that whoever was supposed to be watching the cat hadn't turned up. (the neighbour is housebound so wouldn't of been looking after the cat)

His boss said that know one was looking after the cat. He got it two months ago for a girlfriend who then left him. She didn't want the cat and he didn't want one in the first place so he just left it there whilst he went on holiday. He left the cat flap open and assumed that when it got hungry it would leave and not bother coming back. However the cat is a house cat and his boss guess that is why the cat hadn't left yet.
FIL was horrified and told his boss he was taking the cat. His boss said do what you like with it.

The cat is black and white (like Jess the cat off postman pat) it's a female and it doesn't look full grown though it is thin. It has drank a lot of water and FIL fed him some chicken out of a packet that he bought from a local garage on his way home.

The cat is asleep on the sofa cushions. PILs called me around for some advice because they have never owned a pet. However I have only owned dogs so I have no idea either. I have called my vet and they are taking the cat in first thing in the morning.

Could you please give advice on what to do for this cat. FIL is going to go to the supermarket to grab some cat stuff so I am hoping you can give us some advice as to what to get

ToffeeWhirl Mon 12-Aug-13 19:16:06

I can't believe anyone would behave like this and just abandon a cat sad. I'm no expert, but I'm sure the lovely Litter Tray lot will be along to advise you shortly. Poor cat. Thank goodness your FIL found him and has done the right thing.

Any chance your PIL will want to keep the cat?

OldLadyKnowsNothing Mon 12-Aug-13 19:16:46

Are pil plsnning on keeping the cat? They need food (wet and/or dry, doesn't matter much) and a litter tray, and some litter. Other than that, a check-up at the vet and follow advice from there.

Wineandchoccy Mon 12-Aug-13 19:17:56

How can people be so cruel!

Anyway you need wet cat food and biscuits, mine has Felix as good as it looks 1 pouch a day + biscuits are always out for him. Fresh water, no milk it makes them sick. And a pack of dreamies will make her love you forever!

trixymalixy Mon 12-Aug-13 19:19:52

What an absolute twat leaving a cat to starve!

Hassled Mon 12-Aug-13 19:20:11

Litter tray (put newspaper underneath because it gets scattered) with cat litter and liners if possible (otherwise put some newspaper below the cat litter. Some wet food - Felix/Whiskas, and maybe some dry. And that's it - they're pretty self-sufficient. Poor thing.

Tabby1963 Mon 12-Aug-13 19:24:39

Your vet will know of a cat shelter where you can take her, unless you want to take her on yourself. Don't feel that you have to though because it is a bit commitment. Thanks for rescuing her.

OnaPromise Mon 12-Aug-13 19:25:31

I think FIL should get a new job. I wouldn't want to work for someone like that. Why didn't he just give it over to a rescue ffs.

Tabby1963 Mon 12-Aug-13 19:25:36

p.s. not surprised girlfriend left your boss. He sounds like a dick.

SummerRain Mon 12-Aug-13 19:27:02

Jesus, what a cunt shockangry

Anyway, as for what they need, food and a litter tray. If it is female she needs to be spayed asap and based on the shitty treatment I doubt she's been vaccinated so ask the vet to do that tomorrow. Cats are easy really, they don't need much apart from food and love which it sounds like she's getting now the poor thing.

Good on your fil for taking her, he sounds lovely.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 19:32:46

PIL have never had a pet before however I think the cat has stolen FILs heart. MIL said that she could hear him earlier calling her his baby girl and saying that he will take care of her now. MIL is pretty taken with her too, she is a lovely little thing and she just let FIL pick her up and take in the car with know fuss. I think they want to get her checked out at the vets first and then they can talk properly about keeping her.

FIL has gone to the supermarket now for cat supplies. If you can think of anything else keep it coming and I can text FIL whilst he is there.

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 19:34:39

Thank goodness it looks like she's found a proper home. What a complete stinker to abandon her.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 19:37:53

FIL is shocked that his boss has done this. He and his boss are on good terms and are pretty friendly with each other.

sad They will need to keep the cat inside for at least 3 weeks, also it needs a trip to the vets for flea and worm treatment, vaccinations and a general check up. If the cat has a microchip the details will need transferring.

I wonder if she has been spayed?

I am so glad that she has found a home, what a callous act to just leave the cat like that. What a git.

ToffeeWhirl Mon 12-Aug-13 19:38:27

Sounds as if FIL has fallen in lurve and that puss cat has fallen on his/her feet at last.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 19:47:41

I doubt the cat was microchipped because otherwise the bosses plan wouldn't of worked because someone could of found the cat after it had escaped and traced it back to him.

If cat isn't microchipped is it likely that it has had other vaccinations? Something makes me think that it is unlikely that he will have gotten the cat vaccinations.... What a dick

OnaPromise Mon 12-Aug-13 19:47:49

Fingers crossed for puss. Your PILs sound lovely.

I doubt the cat will be vaccinated too. Hadn't thought of the microchip thing-very true. It will need to be microchipped to your ILs.

Bakingtins Mon 12-Aug-13 19:52:01

What a git. It's an offence to leave an animal without food and water. I'd love to say report him to the RSPCA but I guess that would put PIL in a v difficult position. Good on him for taking action to rescue her.

fackinell Mon 12-Aug-13 19:55:36

Awww your PILs sound lovely. I'd just add to this a nice cosy blanket or bed so she feels totally at home. Lucky little girl. grin

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 19:56:03

Does anyone know how much it would cost to get her vaccinated and microchipped? ILs are going to pay for whatever she needs they would just like a rough idea

deliasmithy Mon 12-Aug-13 19:58:16

How horrible and thank goodness your pils have taken her in. Vets is a good idea - see if the vet can administer flea and worming treatments. Perhaps the boss can shed light on vaccinations etc.

It would be tempting to feed her lots but little and often is best as she may be so hungry she overeats. It will take her a while to build her back up.

mumofone25 Mon 12-Aug-13 19:58:18

Wow I cannot believe somebody would actually do this! So glad that your FIL took her out of that horrible situation. Hope everything goes well at the vets!

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 19:58:38

Microchipping is around £20, I think. Vaccinations (a full initial course) - maybe £60 or £70? Their local vet will be able to confirm because costs can vary according to location.

deliasmithy Mon 12-Aug-13 20:00:13

Some vets have prices on their website.

About a tenner for chipping, and my cheap vet is £25 for first injection against 3 illnesses, but others charge more.

ratbagcatbag Mon 12-Aug-13 20:00:47

It's worth ringing RSPCA or cats protection for info. My cat was a stray, fell in love with her but as I was keeping her rather than adding to RSPCA workload they speyed (well didn't as turned out done, but knocked her out and attempted too) for £20. They sometimes have offers on for chipping too.

deliasmithy Mon 12-Aug-13 20:01:27

My rule is use a cheap vet for vaccines etc, better vets for medical issues and surgery. Price difference is big.

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 20:05:44

Gosh delia - that is a cheap vet. Is that £25 just for the first injection or does it cover the follow up a few weeks later ? (As opposed to annual boosters.)

girliefriend Mon 12-Aug-13 20:07:31

If you have a pets at home place near by (with a vets attached) they do a good deal on kitten introduction pack, we got our cat micochipped and his vaccinations etc for about £30.

For a female cat to be spayed is more expensive about £60, be warned that females cats can get pregnant very young so unless your pil want lots more cats getting her done should be a priority grin

So glad your fil found her when she did, its disgusting behaviour on the bosses part and I wonder what the vet will make of it.

Fluffycloudland77 Mon 12-Aug-13 20:07:53

Well his boss is a cunt.

Neutering is about £50
Microchipping at the same time, can be as low as £10 if the vets are doing a promotion, they are keen on chipping.
Vaccinations, about £50 for the first course of jabs which is two sets iirc.

Butchers classic plus one extra can because its only sold in packs of 6 not 7 is about £3.50 max.

Cat box from wilkos/argos £15, get a plastic wipe clean not wicker or cardboard. Pop a cheapy fleece from asda in there for comfort.

Your pil sound lovely people.

That poor cat must have been so thirsty, I never see mine drink.

Fluffycloudland77 Mon 12-Aug-13 20:10:39

She needs a tray too, and litter and a scoop and smart price nappy bags to put it in the bin.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 20:10:43

Thanks they are just looking for a rough idea. The vet is pretty good [I take my dog there] and the prices are pretty good.
The cat had a little bit of chicken in the car but FIL didn't want to feed her too much in case she was sick in his car.
He gave her another strip and some more water when he brought her in the house. We will feed her again when FIL comes back with food.

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 20:12:47

Modest, frequent amounts is probably best. Poor girl - who has ended up being lucky girl from what it sounds like.

Awww. I bet the cat is relieved.

Any names been suggested?

ShipwreckedAndComatose Mon 12-Aug-13 20:23:02

Good news for the little kitty!

The boss is a shit

MissStrawberry Mon 12-Aug-13 20:24:16

Litter tray
Poop scoop
Nappy sacks

Food - wet and dry
Water bowl

Toys grin
Bed grin

<looks at 2 newish rescue cats and wonders what else we bought>

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 20:24:38

The cat does have a name but it's a pretty awful one so the PILs will probably change it.
DO feel free to suggest names for her

Um, I think we may need to see a picture Mrsc. <shameless beg> So we can suggest names.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 20:28:41

She has just got up and she is wandering around and sniffing everything.

The boss is such a dick because she is such a cute little girl how could anyone do that to anything.

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 20:29:21

Utterly shameless, Sparkling, if I may so.

But such a good thought!

If she hasn't ventured out of the boss's house I hope there is a steaming pile of cat poo somewhere in his house for him to come back to.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 20:30:47

I can't get a picture tonight because I don't have a camera to take a picture.
But she is small and black and white (like Jess the cat off postman pat) She has lovely green eyes and she is just lovely.

May have to be 'Jess' then?

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 20:31:52

sparkling I bloody hope so

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 20:32:56

It may well be Jess though we shall have to see what FIL says on the grounds that he saved her.

BigW Mon 12-Aug-13 20:33:52

Bless your PiL. My auntie took in a cat after his owners threw him out the window of a 5th floor flat because they didn't want him anymore. sad

She said she was only going to keep him for a couple of days until he could be rehomed. Three years on and he is the most gorgeous little cat. So affectionate and lovely. Breaks my heart to think someone just threw him out a window.

LegoAcupuncture Mon 12-Aug-13 20:35:46

Aww poor little thing! Your FIL is an absolute darling rescuing her, his boss otoh is a twat.

Lots of great advice on here. Do buy her some toys, cats love laser pointers but I'd wait until she is very settled before you get one.

MissStrawberry Mon 12-Aug-13 20:36:02

Surely the boss has broken the law? angry.

My rescue cats were found after their "owners" left the house and just fucked off angryangry.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 20:36:10

Gosh BigW that's awful. So glad the cat found a home though.

ShipwreckedAndComatose Mon 12-Aug-13 20:36:42

If there is no poo, could you take some back with FIL to lovingly place around the bosses house??

How long until the dick returns?

My vote is his pillow in the bed....

Fluffycloudland77 Mon 12-Aug-13 20:40:38

It's illegal yes, but does the fil want to make his job untenable with a cat to spay, vaccinate and microchip? Not to mention the cost of squeaky catnip mice.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 20:41:35

Sparkling - grin

Fuzzymum1 Mon 12-Aug-13 20:41:57

It's against the law to leave animals unattended without someone coming to check on them and feed them at least once every 24 hours as an absolute minimum. The boss is a grade A twunt and your FIL is an angel. Little 'Jess' has definitely fallen on her paws there, poor poor thing.

ShipwreckedAndComatose Mon 12-Aug-13 20:43:07

That's the beauty of the cat poo plan!

Jess would get the blame, FIL keeps his job and we all secretly laugh behind dickwad's back...

Fluffycloudland77 Mon 12-Aug-13 20:43:09
ShipwreckedAndComatose Mon 12-Aug-13 20:43:53

Love the photo wink

ShipwreckedAndComatose Mon 12-Aug-13 20:44:36

Awwwwwww! Fluffy that's just adorable!

Tigglettchic Mon 12-Aug-13 20:47:49

Such a sweet story, so pleased he had documents to drop off!! And a kind heart to take her in!

But I have to know, what is her awful name????

We bought our adopted cat all the lovely things, bed, scratching post etc but in the end he just loved his food, sitting under the radiator and sleeping on our bed!!

Remember to give her lots of water and perhaps some cat milk?

MissStrawberry Mon 12-Aug-13 20:50:47

Scratching post!!!! I forgot that. Probably because StrawberryBoy likes to use the carpet and StrawberryGirl likes to use a tree in the garden.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 20:56:09

fluffy That is adorable!

Secretswitch Mon 12-Aug-13 20:56:17

I have raging PMT, and this story plus Fluffycloudlands picture has made
me teary. Mrschocolate, your FIL sounds like a lovely man. It sounds like he and little kitty girl have made mutually agreeable mate grin
Sparklingbrook, thanks for the unlovely snort I made after viewing your stand in picture..

Secretswitch Mon 12-Aug-13 20:57:52

Ohhh..Lord...sorry for the garbled post..I. Meant Your FIL and kitty girl have made a mutually agreeable match!

Relaxedandhappyperson Mon 12-Aug-13 21:10:42

Fuzzymum1 - what law is that? And how on earth is it enforceable?

OP your PILs will need to try out several types of cat food as the cat is likely to have firm ideas about what she does and doesn't like. They're rather opinionated. grin

You keep saying "she": is it definitely a girl? Worth having a good look :-)

Gruntfuttocks Mon 12-Aug-13 21:12:25

Suggestion re litter - World's Best Cat Litter (it really is called that!) - I buy it from Pets at Home, you can also get it online. It's great because it clumps together when the cat wees, so you can scoop out just that lump and therefore it lasts for ages. Also flushable, so if you have room for the litter tray in a bathroom you can just chuck it down the loo!
Cat toys - anything attached to a stick and a piece of string that you can dangle for them to chase will go down well. Also anything with catnip in it for amusing daftness from cat...
It's worth getting some sort of scratch post for the cat - might save the furniture a bit, and they do love to scratch! Willow do some excellent boxes with corrugated cardboard that they can scratch.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 21:22:17

FIL has just come back. He has bought:
2 packets of each wet food he could find and three giant bags of biscuits so she can choose what she wants.
A pink litter tray and a pink spotty litter tray one for upstairs and one for down again so the cat has a choice. Plus a giant bag of cat litter.
Some Dreamies and some other cat treats because she deserves them all.
A bottle of cat milk in case that takes her fancy.
Two new cat bowls one pink spotty and one blue for her water.
A fleece pink cat blanket and a cushion that I think is probably more for dogs but I don't think that really matters. These are for her to sit on the sofa.
A pink bed for their bedroom in case she wants to sleep with them.
A lovely pink collar which he has gone to put on her
2 catnip mice and loads of other toys. (they didn't sell scratching posts)

MIL just looked at him and said this is why he doesn't do the weekly food shop. He has bought loads of stuff though if it doesn't get used I think they can give it to the local cat shelter.

Where did he get that lot from at this late hour? grin

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 21:25:18

gruntfuttocks Thank you for the advice they only had one type of litter in the shop FIL is going to Petsathome after they take her to the vets to "find her better toys"

alwaysonmymind Mon 12-Aug-13 21:26:22

What a lovely man

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 21:28:45

I'm still laughing here. She's only been in the house a few hours and your FIL is right under that delicate little paw! He'll likely be out first thing in the morning buying smoked salmon and roast chicken.

Boy - when they fall, they fall hard, eh?

NorfolkIngWay Mon 12-Aug-13 21:28:55

I lost it at " Calling her his baby girl"

So glad she is safe - get a vet to check her out though- my DM rescued a sweet little girl that she found and she had 4 kittens 3 weeks later grin

I was just thinking that Norfolk, it is possible.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 21:30:09

Sparkling He went to the supermarkets they are all open 24 hours around here.
He went to one first but he didn't like the choice so he went across town to the other two.
The cat is definitely a girl FIL checked before he went out so he had a "colour to work with"

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 21:31:47

........ a "colour to work with"........

Oh my.

MissStrawberry Mon 12-Aug-13 21:32:23

Oh my! I really hope he can keep her. He is under her paw 100% grin

ShipwreckedAndComatose Mon 12-Aug-13 21:33:17

Oh, he's fallen hard!! grin

BigW Mon 12-Aug-13 21:33:17

Your FiL is just lovely. It makes me cry a little bit.

NorfolkIngWay Mon 12-Aug-13 21:33:33

I should add Sparkling that all kittens went to loving homes - <glances at cream cushion with cat atop> grin

Show FIL this beauty grin Better than a scratching post.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 21:36:16

DH is going to laugh when I go home and tell him that she has totally got him hooked.

Norfolk That is possible though boss has said that she had never left the house before (though his word means nothing). Either way I don't think FIL could give her up now and I think he would probably still keep her and kittens is she did have them and they would then try to sell the kittens when they were older. However we won't know either way until tomorrow.

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 21:37:31

Wrong colour, Sparkling. FIL's girl gets pink it seems.

Secretswitch Mon 12-Aug-13 21:39:03

Sparklingbrook! My five year old would love to play on that!

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 21:39:08

Norfolk that's great.
sparkling I showed him and he actually looked like he was considering one until MIL pointed out it would never fit in the house. grin

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 21:39:51

Oh yes sparkling it would also have to be pink

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 21:40:21

(He'd love it - for Goodness sake don't show him that, OP. He'd likely get one !)

SummerRain Mon 12-Aug-13 21:41:24

Oh your fil sounds like a sweetheart, I'm crying laughing at the list of stuff he's bought his new mistress grin

Fluffycloudland77 Mon 12-Aug-13 21:43:48

It's the animal welfare act that stipulates how often animals should be checked on by a responsible adult and that fresh water and food should be available 24/7 eg not offered once a day then taken away again.

The RSPCA check if someone's been by putting piece of tape over the door frame so that if someone's been in its broken.

At least that's what they did to a person on here who thought it was fine to leave her cats alone for two days.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 21:46:39

Sparkling you shouldn't tempt him he seems to have forgotten that he once refused to pay a delivery charge and drove 6 hours to pick up a bed. The cat owns him already.

Cat update she has had a bit of wet food and some biscuits mixed in. She has also just peed in her new litter tray so we are thinking that is a good sign.
He is also testing the name Jess in his head.

boofted Mon 12-Aug-13 21:46:45

I love your FIL. This has made me laugh and cry. What a lucky little cat to have been saved by such a lovely man.

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 21:48:28

It is indeed a good sign - she's relaxed and using the facilities.

If he's not sure about Jess - maybe he could feminise it a bit more eg Jessie, Jessica or so on.

Aww that's warmed me cockles no end.
What's the betting FIL comes back from pets at home with this tomorrow...

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 21:51:11

Do feel free to suggest any other names cozietoesie we are all trying to think of a lovely name for her.

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 21:51:59

I'm only surprised that he isn't planning to give her her own bedroom. How big is their house, Mrschocolate ?

Ooh sparklings one is so much better...wish I had room for that in my house.

goodasitgets Mon 12-Aug-13 21:53:13

She is going to be one spoiled cat grin

I've never been under the paw, oh not me blush

Relaxedandhappyperson Mon 12-Aug-13 21:55:42

Fluffycloudland - there isn't any 24hr limit in that act, I've just looked, nor is there in the code of practice re cats that Defra publishes.

People spreading lies about the law really wind me up. The duty is to protect and promote the welfare of the cat, and to ensure they are not left for long enough to cause distress, must have food and water constantly/every day as applicable.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 21:57:44

The house is a very good size. It has three bedrooms but they are used as bedrooms for the GC so I don't think the cat will get her own room though I think FIL is hoping she will sleep in their room anyway because he is upstairs with her showing her the bed.

BigW Mon 12-Aug-13 21:59:39

He's showing her the bed grin

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 22:00:36

Oh Lord.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 22:01:22

bigW and he is probably bribing her with a dreamie

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 22:03:08

And he's really never had a pet before?

PipkinsPal Mon 12-Aug-13 22:05:32

As she's black and white how about Domino?

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 22:08:28

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 22:08:30

He really has never had a pet before.
His family were too poor when he was growing up. When he was raising DH and SILs he was away with work a lot and MIL was raising the kids and after that I just don't think that they thought about it.

ToffeeWhirl Mon 12-Aug-13 22:08:54

This is so funny! That cat's luck has certainly changed for the better.

Honestly, these people who fall in love with cats <whistles nonchalantly>.

ToffeeWhirl Mon 12-Aug-13 22:09:57

I think MIL is going to end up on the pink cat bed grin.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 22:11:27

Sparkling It really wouldn't surprise me

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 22:13:37

Domino is nice but I think FIL wants something girly just going by all the pink that has just entered the house.

Selks Mon 12-Aug-13 22:13:46

Oh this thread has made my evening, so glad this sweet puss-cat has been found by your lovely FIL.

Lol @ the cat on pillow is so true!

Selks Mon 12-Aug-13 22:15:57

Jess is a nice name, but some other suggestions:

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 22:16:26

Toffee MIL will be okay, she may have to sleep in the DGCs rooms. grin

PipkinsPal Mon 12-Aug-13 22:20:13

Maggie as the puss is the same colour as a magpie. Twinkle?

'his little baby girl'

I was having a poo evening until I read that.
Lucky pussy cat. Cannot wait for updates in the morning.

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 22:23:52

MIL is making a list of possible cat names, apparently they did the same for their children MIL made a list of names she likes and FIL had the final say.

SO far she likes

This has made me smile so much. I like people names for cats...

I'm now seriously considering getting a grey tabby called Harriet....

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 22:28:37

She likes Annie and Harriet as well. She can't use any of your others though coola because her GC and her sister have the same names grin

Mrschocolate Mon 12-Aug-13 22:37:30

I'm going home now to tell DH his fathers new love for pink.
I shall update as soon as I know anything.

Keep going with cat names FIL is going to decide tomorrow after the vets so he can go into town and get her new name put on a tag for her collar.

Thank you all for your advice you were all amazing and VERY helpful.

cozietoesie Mon 12-Aug-13 22:45:35

Best of luck to her at the vets - and try to steer FIL away from diamante, eh?

Selks Mon 12-Aug-13 23:03:25

Ok a few more names...

Oh what a lovely thread! I think kitty will be mightily pleased that her knight in shining armour turned up today.

I'm a sucker for a happy ending!

My little black & white kitty is called Muffin.

Gruntfuttocks Mon 12-Aug-13 23:43:17

The FIL shopping for pink cat accessories is hilarious. He's got it bad, hasn't he?!

mennypennies Tue 13-Aug-13 00:23:43

"Best love story on MN" award goes to...

I wonder if FIL got any sleep? How will he cope with leaving her to go to work today?

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 07:52:28

He'll probably be investigating a 'catcam'.

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 07:53:22

Actually - that was meant to be a joke but now that I think about it I'm not so sure........

grin cozie

MissStrawberry Tue 13-Aug-13 08:23:16

This is all lovely but what if he doesn't get to keep her????

Oh no Miss, do you envisage a problem? sad

MissStrawberry Tue 13-Aug-13 08:33:57

No, but I don't know that if you can just take a cat from someone and take ownership of her. I know the other man doesn't want it. I am just worried OP's FIL is going to have his heart broken.

MissStrawberry Tue 13-Aug-13 08:34:33

her, not it.

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 08:38:00

They'll be fine. Once he's registered her at the vet and paid for treatment - and with the previous owner's 'do what you like with it' - there ought not to be any question about it.

I do feel, however, that FIL may have some problems working for this guy afterwards. I certainly would.

The fil doesn't have to say he has her - she obviously went out of the cat flap and never came back ;-)

My two black and white mogs names are Gertie and Peg - love these names :-)

SparkyTGD Tue 13-Aug-13 09:43:47

Your FIL sounds fab! This is such a sweet story, poor little thing.

< .
< . *

27cats Tue 13-Aug-13 11:36:24

This story is so touching on a day when you're feeling jaded!
Didn't I read somewhere that cats respond best to names ending with an 'y' /'ie' sound? So Millie, Sophie, etc. Mind you it doesn't sound like this new little family are going to need any help with their bonding!!
Hope the vets visit went ok. smile

MissStrawberry Tue 13-Aug-13 12:42:42

That is a relief! Thanks cozietoesie.

I really hope work is fine for the FIL. Would be outrageous if the boss starts being an arse there.

PiratesLifeForMe Tue 13-Aug-13 13:23:37

This thread has cheered me right up. The boss is a real arse but your FIL sounds so lovely - that list of goodies he brought back for her was brilliant! grin she does deserve all the treats!

I think his new 'little baby girl' will have a very happy life now. Am sat at my desk at work feeling a bit soppy & very keen to get home and give my own little girl a fuss!

This is such a lovely thread.

Susie, for a kitten?

MissStrawberry Tue 13-Aug-13 16:53:56

I really want to hear what is happening in the household now owned by a black and white kitten grin.

PiratesLifeForMe Tue 13-Aug-13 18:10:13

Yes me too, need an update!

I think this thread is the reason my kitten is eating posh gourmet perle tonight instead of her usual felix....must not read heartwarming cat related threads just before going to tescos!

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 18:14:15

Cat update.

FIL took her to the vets today. She had obviously been dehydrated and she could use some fattening up. The vet said that it looks like she hasn't been fed enough for awhile so boss probably wasn't feeding her very well before he went on holiday.
She is about 7 months old but she is a bit small for her age which is probably due to the lack of food.
She hadn't had any vaccinations and she wasn't microchipped though luckily she is also not pregnant.
She had now had her first vaccinations and she is microchipped with FILs address .
Apparently it also looks like he had cut her claws back and he has just hacked at them so some are looking pretty rough but they will sort themselves out with time. She also had a scratch on her belly which is a little bit infected though not much so she has some antibiotics to get rid of it.

They went to petsathome afterwards and they have bought some better litter and a scratching post and some more toys.

AND the cat has a name (drum roll)

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 18:16:19

Oh and Poppy slept in between MIL and FILs heads on their pillows.

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 18:17:34

Well done poor little Poppy - and what a complete stinker that boss is.

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 18:18:23

Dare I ask - how is MIL taking all this? smile

lljkk Tue 13-Aug-13 18:20:16

Awww.... so lovely. Hard to rehome Black+White cats, so glad they took to her. Boss is a prat who deserves to be left without food & water for a week.

crazynanna Tue 13-Aug-13 18:23:58

Great name......Poppy

I have a Poppy
Pic on profile

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 18:24:39

MIL is quite happy. She woke up early this morning and left FIL asleep with Poppy. When she started reading the paper Poppy came padding down and lay across her lap. MIL then stroked her for 30 mins straight.

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 18:27:03

crazynanna Awh your Poppy is so so cute.

BeenieBaby Tue 13-Aug-13 18:27:13

Sweet story. Hooray for poppy and boo to his boss! What a dick.

ShipwreckedAndComatose Tue 13-Aug-13 18:29:42

awwwwww! that's making me smile!

that and an image I've invented of boss being smacked in the nuts with a baseball bat

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 18:30:38

........Poppy came padding down and lay across her lap.........

That is one very clever little cat. smile

crazynanna Tue 13-Aug-13 18:30:55

Thank you
We need pics Mrs

'Tis MN Litter Tray Law <nods>

BoreOfWhabylon Tue 13-Aug-13 18:31:07

Lovely thread, lovely posters, lovely cat, lovely FIL.

This thread has made me happy. Thank you OP flowers

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 18:32:53

I have no pictures yet but DH is going around there tonight so he will take a picture for me. smile

flowersfortea Tue 13-Aug-13 18:35:09

Thank you OP and your lovely FIL for a wonderful thread, you've really made me smile and now plotting how to persuade DH to let me get a cat

NorfolkIngWay Tue 13-Aug-13 18:48:56

Awwww Poppy ! <sobs a bit> and runs off to tell the household that rescued kitty is called Poppy - yes they were all waiting grin

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 18:50:01

Remember to remind FIL (or MIL) to book Poppy in for her op ASAP Mrs.

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 18:51:02

PS - that would be as soon as she's in decent health again of course.

georgedawes Tue 13-Aug-13 19:09:20

Lovely thread! Can't wait for photos

MissStrawberry Tue 13-Aug-13 19:16:21

Welcome Poppy to the rest of your life smile.

ToffeeWhirl Tue 13-Aug-13 19:58:49

Poppy slept in between MIL and FILs heads on their pillows.

grin grin grin

That is unbelievably sweet. What lovely PIL you have, MrsC.

As for the boss, starving the kitten and 'hacking' at her nails - I'm seriously concerned that he is a sociopath sad. He seems to have no feelings for this kitten at all and has no worries about hurting her. It's chilling.

Poppy is a lovely name and it sounds as if she and the PIL will be very, very happy together.

(And no, I am not sobbing at the happy ending, not at all....).

crazynanna Tue 13-Aug-13 20:02:42

Yes toffee that must have really hurt the kitten....hacking at the nails <cries>

ToffeeWhirl Tue 13-Aug-13 20:08:16

I know, crazy. I tried to cut our kitten's nails (with special scissors and as carefully as possible) and he just yowled, so I never tried again - just took him to the vet to have it down quickly and painlessly (and by experts). I have no idea how anyone could persist with cutting a kitten's nails if she was in pain... The boss probably didn't even buy proper curved scissors sad.

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 20:12:44

Thank you for your support
DH has gone to ILs with a camera and strict instructions to take a picture.
Poppy has an appointment next week to see how she is doing and then they shall look into her op.
My DCs are really happy that ILs finally have a pet and they can't wait to meet her.

ToffeeWhirl Tue 13-Aug-13 20:21:23

That kitten has found a very happy family to live with.

crazynanna Tue 13-Aug-13 20:26:28

It was meant to be. Seriously. Finding her that day was truly meant to be. This cat is special

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 20:30:54

I think she is special.

Do you know, I've sometimes thought that MN ought to have a board facility for posters' photographs. The Litter Tray could put up photos of some of the very special cats that have passed through here and who many of us remember.

(I haven't thought it through at this stage of course - keeping out undesirables might be awkward.)

QOD Tue 13-Aug-13 20:43:16

crazynanna Tue 13-Aug-13 20:44:42

Cozie that is a fantastic idea! But then I really would spend all day in the LT!

crazynanna Tue 13-Aug-13 20:47:23

We could have Pinot's boys on there, and the live labour one, and some memories, like fab cat and toff we'd beauty. Ooh, and the cat that was found in a building site house who was list for days

crazynanna Tue 13-Aug-13 20:47:43

Lost not list

ToffeeWhirl Tue 13-Aug-13 20:48:35

But every Litter Tray contributor would want their cat there, cozie! How would we decide?

Not that I'm against the idea, of course (imagines ToffeeKitten up there with the best of the Litter Tray special cats).

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 20:49:31

It was just idle musing - would require a lot of thinking through.

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 20:50:28

Exactly toffee - hence the 'just idle musing' wink

Catnap26 Tue 13-Aug-13 20:51:08

How terrible-the cat will probably be very hungry so put plenty of food down over night and pop a litter tray down and just give the cat plenty of love and affection and see what the vet says in the morning.oh and plenty of water down.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum Tue 13-Aug-13 20:53:51

Awww I had a poppy!

Very nice to read, boss sounds vile FIL sounds lovely.

ToffeeWhirl Tue 13-Aug-13 20:57:21

X-post, cozie. I like the idea - in theory... smile.

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 21:02:42

It's a good idea in theory
Until then Poppys picture is on my profile, it's the only one DH took but it is a good one.

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 21:04:39

check you've ticked all the boxes Mrsc. It's not showing - although that may be site lag.

MissStrawberry Tue 13-Aug-13 21:11:25

<hugs crazynanny> wink.

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 21:16:11

I thought I did it right but I am not great with technology so you may have to tell me what to do.

You need to make your profile public Mrsc.

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 21:20:46

Okay how do I do that sparkling because I checked an I thought it was public

My Mumsnet
My profile

Whizz down to the bottom of profile page and change to 'visible to all mNetters' in drop down box.

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 21:27:00

Okay I have done that now sparkling

Mmm still not working. confused

Go to your photo page and do the same in there.

Ooh and don't forget after you have changed them you have to click 'save'.

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 21:33:08

I have done that now sparkling and I have saved.

INeedSomeHelp Tue 13-Aug-13 21:33:56

Just in case your FIL hasn't bought the whole of Pets at Home yet - my cat's favourite thing when he was a kitten was a bed with a metal frame that hung over the radiator. It had a sort of sheepskin sling for him to sleep in and he loved it.
He can't use it anymore because he'd have the radiator off the wall the size he is!

I have no idea why it's not working Mrsc. Help- someone!

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 21:37:36

That must be site lag now. Or a logging in and out thing. Patience, Sparkling.

Or I have forgotten something vital cozie. grin

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 21:41:19

Yes maybe it is site lag.

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 21:42:25

Try logging out and back in again, Mrsc.

Did you definitely save on the profile page bit?

Catmint Tue 13-Aug-13 21:58:57

What a lovely thread, so pleased for Poppy and the rest of her new family!

Based on my MN research, I have used Zooplus to buy stuff for my new kitten (getting her in Sept) I was impressed by their service and prices. They have some toys etc in the sale at the moment. A laser pen which projects a fish, for example!

I confess I spent nearly £50 and told DP it was £30.

Mrschocolate Tue 13-Aug-13 22:01:45

catmint I can see my FIL doing something similar and telling MIL it was only £30 grin

I have logged out and logged back in

You will know when it works because if you hover over your NN it will let you click on it. (Like mine does for instance)

cozietoesie Tue 13-Aug-13 22:03:30

It'll be OK by tomorrow. smile

MissStrawberry Wed 14-Aug-13 11:33:44

She looks like she is going to be boss!!

cozietoesie Wed 14-Aug-13 11:38:57

She certainly does. Beautiful cat.

OhDearNigel Wed 14-Aug-13 11:43:47

All cats need is love, somewhere comfy to curl up, access to a clean litter tray or garden and some food and water.
If the cat is to be a house cat they don't need inoculations unless they are likely to need to go into kennels.

PenguinBear Wed 14-Aug-13 11:58:58

Lovely story and lovely cat smile

Poppy looks adorable.

florencedombey Wed 14-Aug-13 13:24:10

Gorgeous face, full of character. Well done FIL and MIL for taking her on.

Ooh she's beautiful. And very lucky. Fab.

SummerRain Wed 14-Aug-13 14:34:31

Oh she's gorgeous. And a very lucky puss indeed smile

Meid Wed 14-Aug-13 14:42:40

What a beautiful cat. Love the story.

RabbitsarenotHares Wed 14-Aug-13 14:55:40

I think I've fallen in love with your FIL... Such a wonderful man. Be sure to tell him he has a huge cohort of female fans now!

And I love wee Poppy. She's so lucky to have landed on her paws like she has. She'll be making lots of new, happy memories this week. Yay!

What a lovely FIL you have!

Beautiful kitty, she's so gorgeous smile

What a complete wanker your FILs boss is.

Fuzzymum1 Wed 14-Aug-13 18:26:20

Fuzzymum1 - what law is that? And how on earth is it enforceable?

I'm not sure but it was spoken about on an animal rescue type program I was watching recently.

Fuzzymum1 Wed 14-Aug-13 18:31:52

This has made me smile so much. I like people names for cats...

Me too - several of ours have people names - we have: Trevor, Mabel, Fred and Douglas - the other three don't have people names - McGonagall, Boddington (after the beer!) and Marmite because she's a very dark tortie and it just suits her.

Fuzzymum1 Wed 14-Aug-13 18:39:10

For future reference buying flea and worm stuff is way cheaper from than it is from the vet. I order McGonagall's special kidney diet from there and get the flea and worm stuff at the same time.

Fuzzymum1 Wed 14-Aug-13 18:40:50

Oh and I meant to say (having finally caught up with this thread having not had five minutes spare) She is beautiful and so lucky to have found such caring and amazingly generous spirits in your PIL.

Mrschocolate Wed 14-Aug-13 18:52:46

Hooray the picture works grin

Poppy is settling in nicely she seems very happy with PILs.
Boss called FIL today and he didn't even mention Poppy he just said that he was staying on holiday for another week.

SingingSands Wed 14-Aug-13 19:09:28

So happy that your FIL found her and fell in love with her.

The boss should be reported. Planning to stay on another week, the poor cat would be dead by now if it wasn't for FIL rescuing it.

Fluffycloudland77 Wed 14-Aug-13 19:09:31

She is lovely, but in my mind she will forever look like sparklingbrooks temporary picture.

Mrschocolate Wed 14-Aug-13 19:14:27

Fluffy That's okay sparkling's picture is cute too.

girliefriend Wed 14-Aug-13 19:26:48

She is lovely, looks a lot like our cat <bottom lip tremble at thinking of her abandoned and alone..>

<gives up>

<Waaaa waaaa sob hic>

BigW Wed 14-Aug-13 19:30:46

She's got such a lovely inquisitive little face. What a lucky cat!

Just told DH about this and he asked if anyone has said what an arse the boss is. Oh yes, I said, in a number of colourful Anglo-Saxon phrases. He's now playing with one of our cats and being soppy, which may be a direct result of hearing about Poppy!

Mrschocolate Wed 14-Aug-13 21:43:11

I am going to take my DD to meet her tomorrow because my DD is calm and she won't scream and jump around and scare her.

DontcallMeBaby the boss is a complete arse.

cozietoesie Wed 14-Aug-13 21:57:46

Sadly, I guess your FIL will have to work with him in the future. A job is a job and all that, however difficult he's going to find it.

NorfolkIngWay Wed 14-Aug-13 22:03:20

OOOOOH ! she is gorgeous - rocking the eyebrows !

Mrschocolate Wed 14-Aug-13 22:03:40

Sadly FIL will have to work with him. However he is retiring after Christmas so at least he won't have to deal with him much longer.

cozietoesie Wed 14-Aug-13 22:05:09

Now that brought a smile to my face Mrsc.

Mrschocolate Wed 14-Aug-13 22:07:44

Norfolk Yes she does have brilliant eyebrows

I've just found this thread (I'd spent far too long in Chat arguing about cats and landlords ....) anyway that heavens she's been rescued.

Unfortunately the callousness of her owner doesn't surprise me as much as it should. We come across it all the time. Even if she had managed to survive by leaving the house and fending for herself, she would have quickly become pregnant and yet another feral colony would have been formed. What a horrible, horrible man.

Anyway I just wanted to check that she's now booked into to be spayed? I'm sure she will be, but it needs to be soon as she will be coming into season already.

And what a gorgeous face she has! Well done to all the rescuers and may very unpleasant things happen to that bastard of a man!

Mrschocolate Wed 14-Aug-13 22:15:05

thecatneuterer The vet wanted her to but on weight before she is spayed. She has an appointment next week to check her progress and they will book an appointment from there.

Fab. I expect she's being kept in at the moment anyway - so not so much of a problem.

LetUsPrey Wed 14-Aug-13 22:34:17

Was telling a friend at work about this today and that PIL would be changing cat's name. Apparently, they should still use the old name but tag the new name on to the end each time. After a little while (not sure how long), drop the old name and carry on using the new name.

Disclaimer: I have no idea whether this is right but the person who told her about it is a long-time cat owner of many cats.

On the other hand, little Poppy may be used to her new name straight away!

We also agreed that boss man is a dickhead and your FIL is a very very lovely person grin

cozietoesie Wed 14-Aug-13 22:41:17

I suspect Poppy couldn't care what she's called as long as it has Princess or Her Majesty in front of it. Easy to recognize who is now in charge in that household.

LetUsPrey Wed 14-Aug-13 22:46:14

Princess Poppy - I like it grin

Selks Wed 14-Aug-13 22:49:03

Ahh she's lovely...what pretty markings. The name Poppy suits her. smile

Mrschocolate Wed 14-Aug-13 22:53:19

letuspray Princess Poppy sounds about right.

Apparently she didn't really respond to her old name anyway so it shouldn't be too hard to train her.

ToffeeWhirl Wed 14-Aug-13 23:08:52

'Unfortunately the callousness of her owner doesn't surprise me as much as it should. We come across it all the time.' CatNeuterer - it is really chilling to think that there are so many people amongst us who lack such basic empathy sad.

Thank goodness FIL is retiring at Christmas and won't have to deal with his boss anymore.

I love her photo, Mrschocolate - what a poppet.

ratbagcatbag Thu 15-Aug-13 08:51:03

My cat tends to ignore all names anyway unless she decrees us worthy of a saunter over purely to scratch her chin grin

RabbitsarenotHares Tue 20-Aug-13 16:14:08

How's Poppy doing? Has your FIL bought up the entire feline stock of P@H yet?

Namechangingnorma Tue 20-Aug-13 16:49:10

I have just read this, I am so so horrified, it has brought tears to my eyes. I cannot understand the cruelty of some people. What an utter utter b**tard. Thank goodness little Poppy is going to have a loving home. It just makes me so sad, he really should be reported.

Fluffycloudland77 Tue 20-Aug-13 19:24:41

I'd love an update too.

timtam23 Tue 20-Aug-13 22:34:52

I have just read the thread from start to finish and am so glad that little Poppy has a happy new home, can't believe that your FIL's boss was going to leave her to starve though OP! That's awful but what a lovely man your FIL is to rescue her!

SparkyTGD Wed 21-Aug-13 11:54:31

Just had a look at pic, she's very cute grin
